I have been having a really bad, sharp nagging pain above my left rib cage...It's actually right at the tip of my top rib bone...I have had no injury or have not strained anything, and I have no idea what organ is there...It comes and goes, and sometimes is so severe that I can barely move, but then it subsides....It's only been doing this for 1 day...anyone have any ideas what this might be?? Thanks Chris IP: Logged |

The top of your rib cage? You mean like near your clavicle? From or back rib? IP: Logged |

Hi, and thanks for responding...the pain is approximately 3 inches below my left breast at the tip of my rib cage...it's weird...like a burning aching stabbing pain...but I don't think there is any major organ there...I can describe it as the same pain I had when my appendix ruptured...Doesn't that sound weird?? I will go to the doctor on Monday if it isn't gone over the weekend....thanks again for your response...Chris IP: Logged |

You may have costochondritis, which is an inflammation of the cartlidge lining the ribs normally caused either by a viral infection or a strain. It is most likely this if you can pinpoint the area and recreate the pain by pressing on it. ------------------ IP: Logged |

So you mean the bottom of the rib, right? Not the top of the rib? (The top would of your rib cage would be more towards your chin). So the bottom ribs.... again could be a number of things. At the bottom slope of the left rib side of the rib cage there are a lot of ograns, including your stomach, the gallbladder, spleen, the lower lobe of your lung. Your diaphragm is there as well. One possible determination is if you're feeling hard tissue or soft tissue pain. Does the pain feel like it is within the actual rib itself? Or does it feel deeper, like it is beneath/within/underneath the ribs? If you push on it, does it make it worse? Can you DO anything to make it worse or irritate it? You haven't written back, so, don't know if you're all better now? IP: Logged |

I might know what the prob is. The bottom rib is a floater. It doesn't actually connect to the spine unlike the rest of them. This causes for the rib to be able to move easier than the rest, and in my case, ocassionally my rib will move up on top of the one above it, causing EXTREME pain. Try moving the rib down that is causing pain, and if it doesn't seem to work than maybe I am completely wrong. Hopefully that's all it is. IP: Logged |

Could be your stomach I get that type of pain burning and sharp and its my stomach. It sits on the left side under your ribcage. Just type in a search to see a human anatomy chart and it will show you what organ is where. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I have this and its called slipping rib syndrome and there is no cure at all. This can happen when you sneeze or lay or sleep with something digging in your side or sleeping strange. The only way to get relief is to lie on your back. No if you get pins and needles or light twitching in your back its your nerve in your back being pinched. I find that lifting heavy things makes it worse. But I have been off work for a month or so and it has not been to bad for a bout a week or too. I found out that if I bent down and had my ribs touching my leg I could feel the rib move. But I think I had it bad cause I could feel clicking when I walked. So the only thing you can do is rest and take a few pain killers. IP: Logged |
