I'm sixteen, and I've been having a problem with pimples on my arms and thighs, and I get overly obsessive when popping them to the point of pain. I can't seem to stop, and I don't now what to do. Any advice? IP: Logged |

If they are frequent then see your doc about a possible antibiotic for them. Pimples are caused by the staph bacteria which is easily spread especially with popping them. You need to learn to refrain from popping them since this will spread the bacteria. Wash them well with soap and water but be sure not to use that same wash cloth any place or let anyone else use that washcloth since you don't want to spread the bacteria. Be sure to use good hand washing to help prevent the spread of the bacteria. Since they are bothersome for you it would be wise to see the doc for some treatment. IP: Logged |

I'd agree with the above post and suggest that you treat the acne first with a visit to the doctor and good hygenic care of the areas. Once the doctor, probably a dermatologist, helps you clear up the acne, you should feel much better and will hopefully feel no need to pop or pick at your skin anymore. If you treat the acne, and your breakouts decrease, but you're still having trouble keeping yourself from picking and/or popping your acne, skin, or scabs, there may be another problem involved. Lots of people have trouble with picking or excessive popping. When it becomes an obsession, things can become difficult. Most likely, your skin will clear up, and you'll no longer feel any need or obsession to pop or pick at your skin. If your skin clears up, and you're still feeling urges to pick or pop, then I'd suggest you tell your parents and your family doctor. It may be that you need to speak with another type of doctor about your obsession with popping. Your parents and your family doctor can help you figure out what to do and if you need to see another doctor. Good luck! P.S. I think you'll be just fine once the acne's cleared up... so talk to your parents soon about seeing a dermatologist. Explain how much the breakouts bother you and that bad breakouts cause you to pick your acne. I think your parents will understand and will be happy to make you a dermatologist appointment. I just visited my derm. She noticed breakouts on my arms and thighs. This is not acne, there also is not much they can do for it, it's an overgrowth of skin not bacteria. She recomended to apply lotion with low amounts of acid (salic). It should minimize the breakouts. Good luck IP: Logged |

quote: My son started out with that problem at about 6 yrs old and never stopped. By ruling out things, we finally realized he was allergic to polyester. This is not an easy thing to stay clear off. Try not wearing anything polyester for a month and see if it clears up. Read all the labels on your clothes. If there is something you HAVE to wear..put a cotton T shirt or cotton thermals under it so it does not touch your skin. He is 36 now is does not wear any polyester. When he does so acidentally, he breaks out in pimples. It's worth a try. Beverly IP: Logged |
