I've had a clogged ear for about 2-3 weeks now and the past couple days it has seemed to have gotten worse. I just started using ear drops yesterday but, it hasn't seemed to help. There is no pain or discomfort, it's just that i cant hear good, you get that echo, and its really getting annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions?? It seemed to have started after i got over a cold. For awhile i was able to yawn and it would clear up a little but, not anymore. And i find that it's always worse in the morning. Please, someone help! IP: Logged |

Sounds like you may have some fluid in your eardrum. See the doc to be sure your ear is OK and if it checks out fine then use sudafed for the congestion. You do need to check with the doc though and next time don't wait as long before seeing the doc since the longer you wait the harder it can be clear ear problems up plus the greater the chance for damage to you hearing if it is something that needs medical attention. I had a problem a few years ago with one of my ears plugging up on occasion. No pain. And using ear drops, etc. wasn't working. It got so annoying I finally went to the doctor and they cleaned it out. A hardened piece of earwax came out which was causing the problem. So it's possible this is what's causing you irritation. Thanx for the help ppl. Looks like I'll call the doc today. I've been holdin out due to no health insurance at this time. I woke up with, if anything, the ear being worse so, it looks like It's going to have to happen. Again, thanx. If anyone else has any info, feel free to post [This message has been edited by shift (edited 04-02-2003).] IP: Logged |

I had sort of the same problem. My ear would plug up for a few seconds then unplug. I had this on occasion for months and finally went to the doctor. I was given a prescription nasal spray(nasanex? or something like that)it cleared it up fairly quick. Do you smoke? I do(shame on me!)and he said that was probably what was causing it. Told me I would probably have to quit smoking or use the spray forever. I used it for 2 months and never refilled the prescription after that and it has been fine for a couple of years now. ok-you are going to think i'm nuts but this truly works for alot of people-go to your gnc store and ask them if they carry candles to "candle your ear"-i know-sounds spooky-they really aren't candles but are more like little chimneys-you put them in your ear and light them and they draw all the pollen and stuff out of your ear-make sure to wrap something around the bottom to keep from getting dripped on-i know you think i'm nuts but you will be amazed at the end at what has been drawn out of your ear IP: Logged |

Ear candles are great but a clogged ear should be checked out first before trying ear candling just in case there is fluid causing it or an infection brewing. IP: Logged |

I have this problem after swimming, being on an airplane, or a cold. The more serious problem was called a swimmer's ear - essentially, that means that when cold water hits the warm canal of wax - the wax (which is natural) hardens to a point where one needs to have a doctor flush it out. I have had this problem ever since I was a child - even when I didnt swim. Also, I have heard of the candle thing, the cigarette thing, the hydrogen peroxide thing ( which is what the over-the-counter products that consist of a diluted formula of hydrogen peroxide). The only thing that helps me during acute phases of not being able to hear. It involves the doctor taking hydrogen peroxide mixed with warm water and an instrument that flushes your ears - it is momentarily painful - but it works. IP: Logged |

I have heard real good things about the ear candle. A buddy has to use them every few months, and I've been thinking about getting some of thm myself. What is the sensation like? Is it really hot or do you diffuse the heat somehow? How much do they cost roughly? I'm interested... Josh IP: Logged |

I have the same problem now with my right ear. It is clogged and always gets this way during pollen season. I usually have to go to the Nose, throat,& ear doctor to get the harden ear wax out. He said that I need to have it professionally taken out because my ears inside are curved. In other words, wax just stays in my ear and hardens and will not just come out on its own. I (like you) do not have health insurance at the moment so I am just trying the peroxide thing. My ENT doctor once tried to flush my ears out with the warm water treatment and it messed up my equilibrium and I almost passed out. So that does not work for me. Hope you found something that worked. Oh, and if you ever have sharp sudden pain in your ear, that can be caused by a hardened piece of earwax pressing on your eardrum. It feels like an ear infection when that happens to me. IP: Logged |
