My son, who doesnt live at home anymore, has hinted to the fact of overdosing on xanax 1mg medication. He has been depressed for several years over a break up.
My question is: I have heard it is relatively hard to die from a xanax overdose is this true? I know he has about 200 1mg pills he has gotten from his Dr.
Please tell me if this is dangerous or not. I am hoping worst case scenario he will just be unconscious?
But what if he mixes the 200 pills with liquor.
Thanks for any responses
-A worried mother

If you suspect that he will try to commit suicide you should call 911. Waiting around to see what happens isn't a good way to go, and hoping that what he tries to kill himself with won't work isn't a good way to go. Call 911 give them his name and address and tell them you think he is trying to kill himself, they'll go pick him up, he'll most likely be put into a hospital untill a doctor can evaluate his mental health, it may be hard but you'll be glad you did. What would you do if you did nothing and he died?
Anybody considering suicide needs professional help.

I'm not sure how much xanax it would take to actually kill someone, but why take a chance. Everyone reacts differently to meds. Not too mention 200 pills are a lot even if it's just aspirin. I think if he's hinting that he may do it he wants someone to stop him. My close friend never hinted he just took a shotgun and shot himself in the chest. Judging by where he shot himself he did not want to die, but he used the wrong type of gun and didn't know. The bullet shredded his insides causing him to bleed to death. I was the one that had to perform CPR on him before the ambulance arrived. The worst part of all of it was his last breath was off the first breath I gave him. No matter how they do it, walking in on someone laying there helpless is a memory you never forget. Please don't take a chance!! Offer him help and advice and lots of support and if he won't accept it take other measures to ensure his safety. Take care!!

I am sorry to hear anything about suicide, My husband went threw this for years, He was in the hospital 5 times over 6 yr. and goes to counsloring 2 times a month, Thank God it is working. But back to your question(sorry) My sister-in-law had a problem with those pills, she got addicted to them, well she drank with them also, she was taking up 120 a week. She had to go in rehab to get off of them, they told her she could have died from so many. If he told you or anyone he would kill himself, you should report it. I know it sounds bad, but they say if someone talks about it , it is a cry for help, If he sees a Dr. or counslor, if may help. There may be more wrong than you know. I wouldn't take the chance, but he needs to help himself as well. My husbands friend died from pills years ago, she was upset from her boyfriend and took pills, she called for help, but by the time anyone got there, she was outside on the ground and died on the way to the hospital. Not trying to scare you but if he won't get help, YOU get it for him. I hope everything works out for the best. Good Luck.

200 of ANY pill can kill you! It sounds like he needs to be on antidepressants, not Xanax. What kind of a doctor will prescribe someone 200 Xanax anyway? Mine won't even prescribe me a 60-pill prescription for my anxiety.

I would try to talk him into seeing a psychiatrist who can prescribe an antidepressant and talk to him about his problems. He is definitely calling out for help!! You can't just sit by and let him take pills and hope he doesn't die. If he does attempt suicide and is unsuccessful, he will probably end up in mental ward, so it's best that he get the therapy now to prevent a worse situation for himself. May the angels be with him.

~mandy~ is right. If you suspect your son of committing suicide, notify the police or any other authorities. Do it for your son's sake, his life.

I had a friend who didn't tell a soul, didn't even tell her best friend that she was going to kill herself. She just threw herself off the cliffs down here and killed herself. The most sadest thing in the world to me is suicide. I also went through that period when I was a bit younger.....but that was before I converted and found God. Back in the day I actually tried it, I suffered a lot....but at the same time I was suffering. I'm glad I got through it...thanks be to God. So now I try to help those who are suicidal. My goal in life is to build/set up a center for those who are suicidal.

Your son may have his own reasons. Truth be told he needs help.

Normorcrazy, I'm SO SO sorry to hear of your friend. I know how extremely hard it is to deal with suicide. I am so sorry to hear of that. My heart aches for you. Suicide affects not only the one who committs it, but the family, friends, and the strangers who genuinely care.

If you suspect suicide, tell someone! I cannot stress that enough. I'm glad I got help, so now I can help others. Help your son.
Praying to God for the End of Suicide,
Upshutter
