My son is 16 with ASD. He wants to go to college when he graduates. Will he have an IEP?

It is my understanding that there are a select few colleges that will accept a student with an IEP- keep me posted because my son is 12 but very definitely wants to go to college.

I will let you know meme. My son is a Junior this year, but when searching for colleges for my other children we came across some schools that seemed to be more accomodating to students with disabilities. At the time we were not so sure that our autistic son had the capability to graduate with a diploma let alone be able to attend college so we never questioned whether he would have an IEP.

The IEP will go with the student to college. It is really important to carefully go over the IEP during the senior year, so everything is as updated as possible as to what services they need. My daughter has Aspergers, is a senior this year and applying to colleges. We are only looking at schools who are willing to work with students with disabilities. All you have to do is ask what services are offered to students with disabilitis and you start to find out which schools can accommodate. The biggest difference will be in college, the student must seek out the services themselves and probably inform the teacher themselves, so they know what they need. Best wishes to you!

Some particular colleges may offer programs specifically for students with Asperger's Syndrome. I work in one of these programs. I wouldn't recommend ours, because we are in a major transition period right now. But I am sure there are other ones like it available.
