Hi, I had a spinal fusion of the L5- S1 last October and the past few months have been having terrible hip pain, radiating down to my knees. When I lay down or sit it seems to be the worst, at nights I am having a hard time sleeping because when laying on my sides the pain is unreal.
JUst wanted some feedback on this thanks.

Hi Blackbird and welcome
I'm sorry that I can't help you with this, since I don't know anything about fusions, but I'm sure others on this board with experience will respond. But I would really recommend you call the surgeon immediately and tell him the problem and ask to see him. You need to be treated right away, especially if you've been having bad pain for months!

Good luck!

Sounds nerve related. Can you get an EMG done to see if there was any nerve damage?

Blackbird,

Is this single side or bilateral pain? Does it travel from your hip through the buttocks and into the back of your knee? (sciatica). Do you have this pain any other time of the day? Are you stiff when you get up in the morning? Can you sleep on your back with a pillow underneath your knees?

Blackbird...Four years ago, I had 5/1 fusion. Two years later, I began experiencing hip pain. An MRI indicated that things looked good at the 5/1 level. But not so good at the 3/4 and 4/5 levels. So I began the whole process of PT, injections etc... Over the next two years, there were good and bad days. Gradually the pain extended my entire right leg and foot. Three months ago, I underwent another surgery to "fix" the two affected levels. BUT...L5/S1 was and is still holding strong!

I too have terrible leg/back/hip pain, especially at night while trying to sleep. I have not had fusion, I have had three laminectomies and have nerve damage which affects my right leg. I just posted this problem this evening (post title "Hi Peeps") - so it is ironic to see the same type of problem listed here. Since I seem to suffer the same symptoms, not being able to lie on side (at least not for any length of time), I also cannot lay on my back, and God forbid if I should have to get up and go to the bathroom during the night, I have to practically crawl there, perhaps it is not from the fusion itself but rather nerve related? I am just guessing because our symptoms sound alike but I never had a fusion as I said. ~ Jill P
