I'm a 35 year old male who's pretty fit and in good shape & health. About 3 weeks ago, I developed a small pain in my lower left side of my stomach, almost to my left hip. Then a day later developed nast shooting pain through my butt all the way down to my lower calf. It kills when I bend or try to put my socks on. It hurts when I sneeze. I assume this is called sciatica. I've had backpains (L4-L5 disc) before but nothing like this. My pains were usually taken care by VAX-D traction but this time, I feel no effect. Whom should I go see, an orthopedist or a neurosurgeon? I've not injured nor lifted anything heavy. One thing I suspect is my 1.5 yr old son who constantly demands to be held. He's about 30 pounds and growing. I'm worried 'cuz my wife's due with our second child in May. What if I become incapable of holding our beautiful kids?!?!?

Yes it probably is siatic nerve and that can be very painful. I have worked in the chiropractic field 20 years and every one I saw with this problem was in agony. I have to say it can be a life long sporadic problem too. Some people never get over it. Try a chiropractor, that might help. Maybe x-rays could tell better if visiting a chiroprator than not having xrays too.

Hi, Hwake. There are a lot of people much more experienced than me with these things on this board, but this is what I can tell you: an orthopedic surgeon treats all ortho problems in the body - knees, elbows, etc. and "looks at your back from the perspective of its bone and cartilage structure A neurosurgeon, on the other hand, views your back as a network of nerves. What can surgery do to restore the network's function to normal? The answers to these questions often straddle the line between the 2 specialties. A bone or cartilage problem interferes with a nerve's function. Fix the former and you fix the latter." This is a quote from the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Healing Back Pain". My ortho surgeon (who is also a spine specialist) poo pooed this definition, explaining that the only person you want treating your spine is someone who is a spine specialist - someone who is specifically trained to do spine treatments and surgeries. I'm researching this carefully right now, and I am starting to see his point. Look for a spine specialist. This is an MD or DO who has done extra training in the spine. He/she could also be an ortho surgeon, or maybe a neurosurgeon (I'm not sure about that). I also saw a neurologist (for my sciatica). He was very helpful, but I felt out of place because he was seeing people with neurological disorders, like MS. Good luck. You will get more experienced back sufferers answering you very soon.

Hi hwake.....
I'll give you just a little on my history...Fusion with plate and screws C5/6, Lumbar fusion L4-S1 for severe sciatica (I know the pain you are talking about....ouch!!) I had a revision last september L3-S1 for spinal stenosis and hnp L3. I see a orthopedic spine surgeon, and have been very happy with him....I'm sure you will hear lots of recommendations from many, If you can get info from any of your area hospitals on spine specialist whethter they are ortho or neuro that may be a good place to start....I agree on finding a SPINE specialist!!
Good luck...keep us posted

I experienced pain just as you have descibed.I sought the help of a chiropracter and a trained physical therapist, the PT used a technique called MCKENZIE LOW BACK EXERCISES these exercises had me pain free in one session.I've now had 4 sessions in 3 weeks and are cured,no pain, can do the exercises at home and have plenty of activities to look forward to.
