Hi everyone
I was just reading Merrida's post asking about the long-term effects of chronic pain medications and Karloff's detailed and informative reply. Now I have a question of my own -- what about the long term effects of OTC medications? I'm usually able to control my pain with high doses (800-1000 mgs) of MOTRIN and one of my doctors said this was O.K. to take in that dosage and good for inflammation. But I don't know if it's o.k. to take long term. It doesn't seem to cause me any problems now, but am I causing liver or kidney damage or something without knowing it?

I'm really worried now and hope someone has an answer to this one!

Kim

Hi everybody

Still looking for an answer on this one. I did a search on Motrin on this board and pulled up one or messages referring to liver or stomach damage from long term Motrin (ibuprophin) use. But how long is long term? I take 800 or 1000 mgs at a time but only when I'm hurting (which is not every day but only when I overdo it) or when I know I'm going to be hurting (before a car trip of more than 30 minutes). So there are days when I don't have to take anything but other times when I might have to take 800 mg 3X a day. Am I asking for trouble doing this???

Please help with any info you have or where is a good place to find info on this.

Thanks and God bless
Kim

Sorry it took me so long to see this. Motrin (ibruprophen) is bad for your stomach or can be in larger doses taken for long periods of time. It can cause ulsers and stomach bleeds and GERD and other things. This doesnt happen to everyone but it happend to me. I have had TMJD for 12 years I spent 10 of those 12 years on NSAIDS before the Doctor put me on Opaites (sp?) The damage to my stomach happend over time and I am now on daily medication for that I started on Nexium because it can heal the damge already done and prevent further damge it is a time release pill and I took one a day till I discovered LOSEC it has been my wonder drug it works like Nexium but I find it better. Anyway I know I am way off topic from your question but just like Tylenol use causing liver and kidney damage over time and in large doses Advil, Naproxen and other NSAIDS can cause bad stomach damage as well. Always take any NSAID with food or milk. My Doctor put me on percocet to start with after the NSAIDS but he got concerned over the amounts of tylenol in the pill and put me on Oxycontin. It has the same drug oxycodone in it as the percocet does but NO tylenol or Ibruprophen. It is a time release 12 hour tablet so I take 2 pills a day. I hope I didnt scare you but the damage can happen talk to your doctor or pharmacist about this and see what they say. I hope this helps you in some way. Take care.
