Has anyone who has had epidural steroid shots had any side effects? I have gained weight and my face looks swollen. The nurse said I wasn't given enough medication to cause side effects, but I don't believe that. I would like to hear from anyone who has had any side effects at all.

Hi Sheila~ I had 3 ESI's last year and although I didn't have your side effects, I had one which was depression. Whew, talk about feeling sorry for myself. I was getting really mad at myself for feeling so sorry for myself and crying (that is NOT me), and hubby was the one that said hey, you felt this way 2 weeks ago after your first ESI. And the 3rd one, same thing. It didn't make me mad tho' the 3rd time since I knew it was the meds. I don't know how long ago you had them, but if it's recently, don't give up hope. It took a week or so from the 3rd one to really feel the diff. They helped me a lot. Good luck to you~ Daubie

Hi Sheila

Girl,....... let me tell you what side effects that the steroid injections have done to me! My face is swollen, and you can tell that it is. I have gained some weight, forget the bakini this summer and my fingers are so swollen that I can't even wear my wedding ring. Then to top it off, this is every womens worst nightmare, I had my menstral cycle for 2 months! Did you read this correctly? 2 MONTHS! In this two months, it stopped for only one day. I had to call my GYN, and she put me on provera. This was all caused by the steroids. I guess that was the price I had to pay, because I finally got some RELIEF!

I could handle the weight gain, I could handle the fingers and the face being swollen, but the long lasting period from hell.........NEVER AGAIN! And the most embarrasing thing was, when I would go for a test and the doctor or nurse would ask me, "when was your last menstral cycle"...........

The price us women have to pay, in order to feel better!

Take Care,
Brenda

Hi Sheila,

What happened to you with your menstral cycle being delayed for 32 days, is usually what happens if you are going to have side effects from the steroids, but of course I had to be the opposite. That is the way my luck goes!!! I agree with having to deal with the the balloon face.........yikes!

You had mentioned that other things have been going on. What are they, if you don't mind me asking?

I hope that all your side effects go away, and you find relief soon.

Take Care,
Brenda

ok, I dont mind at all. All the following weird little things have been happening to me in the last 6 weeks and all only since I have had the injections. hot flashes, sweating in my sleep, acne, trouble sleeping, a strange coating on my tongue, dry skin, nausea, cramps, and of course the weight gain, swollen feet hands and the big balloon face.
At first I thought all my symptoms were the onset of menapause (even though Im only 39) but my gyno said she didnt think it was, Im still waiting for the bloodwork. But anyway you asked LOL

Shiela9916,I had 3 injections in late 1999 and 3 in late 2000. I don't think I had any side effects, I know I sure didn't get any relief, except maybe a day or two .I guess I never thought about it as I am 49 and going through menapause and with everthing going on in my body I don't what is causing what. I wish I would have keep a better journal of all of it but of course when this all started I keep thinking it would be over soon and didn't see any real reason to document everything all though I have now started pulling everything togather and trying to document what did what.Good Luck and hope you feel better soon.

Hi Sheila

All this stuff that you described is not in your head, it is from the steroids! I have had everything that you stated, except the acne.

****As far as the coating on your tongue, I had that side effect also. The coating that you have on your tongue is simular to a yeast infection, but it is called "thrush". You are probably going to need to get a swoosh and swallow medicine for that, which is called Mystatin! My tongue was so bad because I let it go, that I had the thrush on the roof of my mouth, and on the side of my cheeks. I thought I called use my toothbrush and remove most of it, but that didn't happen. I KNOW it is caused from steroids and antibiotics. I had a hard time tasting my food, and after awhile, my tongue became sore. Please tell your doctor about this so he can perscribe you something.

I can relate to the hot flashes and also the sweats! There was a guy on the boards who suggested taking Vitamin C before going to bed, and he said that it really helped him with the sweats at night. So maybe if it is really bothering you, try going that route. The sweats could also be from any pain medication that you may be taking.

As far as the nausea, I have not found anything to do about that. I am not sure if it is from the steroids, or from my percocets. I did have cramps, but when my period from hell stopped, the cramping stopped with it. As far as the dry skin, keep your body moist with lotion. I also noticed that it was destroying my hair! My hair dresser asked me what was going on. He could tell by the texture that I something was going on. He gave me FREE leave in condition for that.

I guess we don't realize, how harsh steroids are. I guess we were the unfurtunate ones, to have all the side effects. if I were you, I would definately tell your doctor about all of this. I told mine, and he said that he was going to slow down on the injections.

Remeber, you are not imagine this stuff. It is good that you noticed the changes in your body. Please get that tongue of your checked out, I can almost guarantee you, that I am right, that you have thrust, and he will give you a swoosh and swallow medicine called Mystatin!

Welcome to the wonderful world of steroids! Isn't this one big visious circle????

Take Care,
Brenda

Hey all, it's a good thing I read this post & all the information you have supplied to one another. Thank you as I am due to have my 1st shot on Tuesday. Since several of you have mentioned Thrush as a side effect I am going to begin taking asidolphilias now & hopefully avoid that side effect.

As far as the nausea and dry skin. I have already experienced the nausea from pain level & my skin has become extremly dry since my disks have herinated. I don't know if it's due to my body concentrating to heal that area or the pain & muscle relaxer meds that I am on. I just know that my psirious is going nuts & I can't stop scratching.

Once again, thanks for the info & any of you experiencing those awful thrush syptoms might consider taking asidolphilas rather than having to deal with yet another physical problem & medication. Cat

Sheila, thank you for your well wish's. Right now I'm scared to death & just beginning to learn about this disease & the options available, so I'm kind of hovering in the background, reading as much as possible, but I shall let you know how I fair. My 1st injection is the 24th so I'll let you know then. Once again, thank you so very much your kindness & I hope that your side effects are decreasing, that you find relief soon & that I can return the favor one day. Cat

I've only had one ESI, and it was last year, but I also had some side effects: I had a bit of water retention, acne flared up REAL bad for like 3 months, became extremely emotional (almost like being pregnant) and I started skipping periods. In fact, I only had one real period from last October through March. I JUST started having "normal" periods again in May of this year. That was almost a year after my ESI, so that's how long it took me to get past the symptoms.

Hi,
Just found this bulletin board while searching for info on ESI's.What a relief to find others out there going thru the same things!!!

I have had persistent low back pain for about 4 months now. I have been thru X-rays, MRI's, Renal ultrasounds,Bone scans, you name it. Finally an orthpedist determined that there was a slightly herniated disk in the lower back, and recommended an ESI.

My first one was 2 days ago at a Pain Management Clinic at our local hospital. I had no idea what to expect, except for the horror stories I was hearing about epidurals! Which sure didn't help my apprehensions!

The procedure was extremely uncomfotable...I wasn't given anything to relax me beforehand. Knowing I have 2 more to go thru really doesn't set well.During the procedure it was found that the disk is also cracke which I was told was caused by smoking....

I received the usual discharge papers with aftercare instructions but no specific details of the possible side effects I might experience. So that night I experienced night sweats all night!! This really didn't alarm me as I'm 49 and approaching menopause anyway.

When I awoke at 6a.m. my face and neck were on fire!!!I looked like I had spent the entire day at the beach and was running a 100.1 temperature. I called the hospital to ask a few questions and the nurse suggested I take Tylenol and not worry unless temp. went up to 101.0. She then told me I was experiencing what she called a "Steroid Flash"..and should take Benedryl 2x day until it cleared up..
I was very irritated that these things were not discussed with me prior so I would know what to possibly expect. Has anyone else had a really intense flushing from these injection???? And anything about cracked diskd and smoking??
Thanks!!

Well, I had some side effects no one else seems to have had... I developed the WORST case of acid-reflux I could ever have imagined. I constantly had acid burning the back of my throat, and would wake up gagging and coughing horribly nearly every night for three months.

I had two ESI's at L5/S1 area within two weeks of each other, then had a facet block at C6/C7 a month later. (none of these did a thing to help pain, btw) The burping up of stomach acid began shortly after the facet block, and it got so bad, I went to the ER. They gave me 40mg of Nexium to try out once a day, and my problem was solved.

I stayed on the Nexium for about 4 months after that, and rarely had an episode again. I also gained 25 pounds, which I have since lost. I always saw the ESI as a band-aid approach to serious problems, and I will NEVER have another one again.......

Joe-I have that also, but think it is from the ibuprofen. Getting to a point when I eat that food hurts when it gets to a certain spot. And then it just churns, sometimes that stops and sometimes I have to throw up. Doc gave me a pill I take half hour before eating and it doesn't help. Specialist gave me nexium but still waiting on mail order script to be delivered, so am not taking any ibuprofen until it arrives. Seems anything I take now makes it flare up.

------------------
Back spasm episode requiring a week in hospital-1998
MRI 1998 showed bulge at L5S1. Doc gives me Oxycondin, Celebrex, Quinine Sulfate, Celexa. Took myself off these, reaction to Celebrex then Relafin, then Vioxx.
July 1999 Pain Management series of three steroid injections, didn't help.
Physical therapy and TENS unit, neither helped.
MRI Jan.2001 referred to specialist
Discogram March 2001 showed 4 of 5 lumbars bulged, surgeon says fusion out of question. Aquatic therapy seemed to make me feel better overall but did nothing for back.
Third MRI Dec 2002, in middle of major episode with back that didn't end until March 2003. Traction therapy total failure. Results read of MRI said no change.
Sept 2003 Neucleoplasty specialist showed me the tears in two of the lumbars and leaking.
Pain has progressed into hips and down back of legs. Standing has been lowered to 15 minutes from 30.
Drugs of choice ibuprofen 800mg 3xdaily.
Vicodin as needed.

Vicky: I had those night sweats it was awful. Funny thing is when I asked my dr about side effects he said there should'nt be ANY....HA that was why I came to the message board. Now I have heard from several doctors that steroids cause many many different side effects. And have heard this from many ppl aslo. So anything different and strange that has happened is probably caused by the steroids. Hang in there and good luck
