Hi, I'm new to these boards so please be patient with me. I have been having pain in my wrists and hands for 4 months. My neuro said that I have a bad disk in my neck area (c5 and c6) that might be causing the pain. He also can't rule out carpal tunnel syndrome so he really can't pin point where the pain is coming from. I am scheduled to have a cortizone shot in the c5 and c6 disk. What can I expect from this shot? Will the shot hurt? Will the shot come from the back or the front of the neck? How come the shot isn't given in the hand? I've heard that some people have had this shot and they never hurt again. Is this true? Any kind of information will be helpful! Thank you!

Hi arw,
I had an epidural steriod injection into my C5/C6 disc about 2 weeks ago. They did mine under x-ray, so they could be sure where they were putting it. As far as pain, there wasn't much to be honest. I think I had it built up to more than it turned out to be in my own mind. The room was a little intimidating, because of all the sterile conditions and precautions, but the actual procedure only took about 5 - 10 minutes. He numbed me with novacaine first, so I really didn't feel the injection needle...only a bit of pressure when he got it where he wanted it, and a bit more when he injected the cortisone. I had to stay in the waiting are for 15 minutes afterwards, just to make sure I didn't have any reactions, but then I was allowed to go home. I did have someone drive me there, so be sure you do that as well. I had no ill effects from it, but unfortunately, I can't say that it did much for me either. I have been back to my neurologist since then, and my main problem was determined to be in my T1/T2 region...so now I'm waiting for an injection there on November 7th. I pray this one works! I hope yours works for you, too.

I must say I'm rather surprised that your neuro hasn't done nerve conduction studies to make sure if it's your disc or if it's just carpal tunnel. I'd hate for you to have an injection in your upper back/neck if you don't have to have it. Oh, and yes, they go in the back to do it. Mine went in just to the left (that's where mine was protruding) of my spine down toward the middle of my back, and the pressure I felt was more toward my left ear, so I guess he went in and up to the C5/C6 disc. Only had a bandaid afterward, too...just so you know.

If there's anything else I can do to help you, please feel free to post a reply. I'll check back to see later. Good luck,
Carla

Thank you for your reply cljones. The information you gave me has been very helpful. It makes me wonder too that my doctor is given me the shot when it might be carpal tunnel syndrome. I knew nothing about this shot until you replied and I thank you for your time. I'm more at ease now and I don't dread it so bad. Hope you are doing well and good luck!
