Not all eyes and faces look good with that "smouldering" look. Some, like you, may end up looking like "raccoons" since this is a very difficult look to carry off. You need to have a very good, soft and creamy eyeliner pencil and a good blending/smudging brush. Apply the pencil along the lashline, then using the brush or blending tip, gently smudge the liner so that the line becomes very blurred. You have to make sure that the liner extends all around the eye, including the inner corner but when you "feather" it out, the inner corner has to be showing a thinner line of the shadow than the outer corners. Also, you need to extend your eyeshadow over the rest of the lid and make it go up at the corners, like a "cat eye" look. This will open up the eye and not make it look confined and small. Again, blend everything very well so there is no harsh demarcation line. With that said, I need to repeat that this look is not for everyone. I know women who do it and it looks great but I also know many women who look horrible with that look. Their eye and face configuration simply do not allow this look. You just have to know and accept your face with all its glory and limitations and realize that even if we like the way something looks on someone it does not always follow that it will also look good on us.

Thanks Rita -
But what about the bottom lashes?? Should I just use regular liner?

No, use the same shadow (eyeliner) all around your eyes and make sure you smudge it just like on upper lid. It is actually the smudging along the bottom lashline that gives it the "smouldering" look.

That is pretty much exactly what I do. But I use a black pencil and put on a thin line RIGHT along the lash line, then I go over it with dark brown eye shadow. It makes it look really smokey and awesome. I do that all the way around the eyes.

Here's what I use for smudging on other people and myself, at times. (mostly I use my pinky on myself)- "219 pencil" and/or "sponge tip applicator"- but any rounded sponge tip will do, and it doesn't have to be from mac:
http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/products.tmpl?SUPERCAT_NAME=Tools/Accessories&CATEGORY_NAME=Brushes&SUBCATEGORY_NAME=Eye

Apply your foundation/concealer, blend it in on your eyelid. Apply a medium or light color of shadow to your entire lid (grey-ish/silvery color ideal for the grey smoky look). Then line your upperlid from inner to outer corner. Then line under your eye and the rims. Then with your brush or sponge tip applicator, smudge the lines (stay as closet to the eyelid as you can). Just smudge and blend a little at a time... blend the line so that the color fades farther from the lashes. Then layer an eye shadow of a contrasting or coordinating shade on top of the liner and blend it up and out at the outer corner of the eye.

this is as easy as I can explain it. It does take practice... here's an article how-to I found from marie claire... maybe it will help explain it, too:

I found that heating your eyeliner with your hairdryer for a few seconds before application makes it much easier to get the smokey eyed effect. Just make sure that it doesn't get to hot. This creamy liner will glide on no problem and doesn't look as conservative.

Does anyone line the inside of your eyes? I see this on lots of celebrity and it looks good, but I'm always to chicken to try it. I'm thinking like Catherine Zeta Jones.

I used to line the inside when I was younger, the way my mom taught me. It just doesn't look right on me though, I have tiny eyes and it makes them look even smaller. Unless you use a light color on the inside it'll make your eyes look smaller.

I always line my lower inner lid. I use grey eyeliner and I make it really dark at the inside corners..it looks really good I think. My eyes aren't small but they aren't big..they are almond shaped..a lot of people tell me I look like a cat cuz of my eye shape and the way I line them makes it look even more like a cat.

One suggestion - go ahead and line your top lids with eyeliner, but on the bottom ones just use a dark eyeshadow. It looks more sultry and its easier to blend/control how dark and how smudgy you want it. On an evening out, you can even use a dark eye shadow with sparkles (small ones that make your eyes shine in the light!) i love sonia kashuk's eye palette. it has all the colors you need to blend with!

best thing to do is to go to the mac counter and ask them to do it on you and just secretly pay attention to every single thing they do. I did that and then just went to the dollar store and got matte black shadow and $2.00 wetnwild brush kit from target.

Here's what they did, but I ENCOURAGE you to secretly watch someone do it to you it's extremely fun and free but don't tell them you're trying to learn, just that you wanna try the smokey eye look it TOTALLY helps if you bring a picture.

Here's what they did:

with a regular shadow brush
applied a cute color all over and under my eye
my cute color was pink but you can pick.

with the black: used a small angled brush
wet it
put it in the black and then pinched it with her fingers
Lifted up my top lid on the inside and ran a line from inside to outer corner smudging into my lashes slightly

more water more black pinched brush again and

did the same on the bottom

Applied lots of mascara and WOW it was awesome!!!

good luck
