Not that it matters now since dad died in l995. But I want the younger people on here to know that the criteria for "determining alcoholism" changes over the decades POSSIBLY to pad the doctors' and clinics' pockets. And the pharmaceutical industry, drug rehab, AA, etc etc down the line.
Going back to my early childhood I remember my parents drinking every night while laughing at the old sitcoms.
Next day dad would leave for work right on time. My sister would join in on the weekends; she'd bring her husband and they'd all drink beer, eat and laugh. All through my teen years he kept it up: he got a promotion, we moved, and he never missed a day of work.
Came home and started on the beer or gin. Ate a big dinner, watched tv, more beer. Kept a lovely garden and yard on the weekends. I never heard a cross word or fight. In Those days it was called "socializing." Now they'd be called alcoholics and they'd be depressed about it and be going to support groups. Around age 66 dad retired and his arms started getting numb. He stopped all drinking on his own then; he just 'knew' it was the gin. Mom stopped too. I recall her saying parties were no fun without booze.
Dad died from unrelated causes at age 90.
Just my 2 cents on changing definitions of what is an alcoholic. What killed my drinking stepdad and my sister? Cigarettes. My D's new boyfriend smokes one every 10 minutes; when he laughs you can hear his chest girgle. So sad. He's such a sweet man and only 40.
