Has anyone tried hypnosis to quit drinking?
The reason I ask is simply this; I used to smoke, at one point 30 cigs a day and thought I could never quit. After several tries on my own, I went to a hypnotist who was traveling through town and in a one hour session I was a non smoker... This was October 10, 1989!!

I now like to drink beer and wine. It is to the point where I so look forward to and crave the relaxation from consuming 2 to 5 beers or wine after work that is is interferring with my goals for working out and doing yard work.

I do however do think this is all mental and not physical. I think I may be able to be hypnotised to avoid the craving.

What are your experiences or advice?

Thank You!!

Nod,
I have heard of quite a few poeple who have quit smoking thru the use of a hypnotist, but I've never heard of anyone having their cravings for etoh/drugs reduced thru hypnotism. That doesn't mean it won't work.

Let us know if you try it. Good luck.
Thanks,
verylucky

Hmmm that sounds interesting...Somebody once told me nicotine is harder to kick than drugs or alcohol. Is that true? I am a smoker of course about a pack every 2 days, I dont drink anymore...I used to binge drink when I was in my 20's (20 yrs ago) but I havent touched a drop of alcohol in over 5 years.
I wish hypnosis did work for opaites and alcohol ( no one has said it doesnt yet) so I will assume it can. You realise how easy it would be to get off all this stuff if it did?? I know I for one would pay big bucks to get off opaites and nicotine. Manage my pain with tylenol and save my cigarette money and buy a car lol.
If anyone knows if this works for something other than smoking can you let us know? Thanks a bunch.

This is very interesting! We may be onto something here gang! The clonopin for the first 7 days to cut down on w/d's,then do the hypnosis to get through the deppression and blahs and cravings! OR Do the hypnosis, use the clonopin for 7 days and then your home free....sounds too good to be true..LOL!
Now my question is kinda 2parts....will the hypnosis mask the w/ds or completely get rid of them...I am refering to the physical symptoms or does hypnosis only help with like the mental aspects?

Okie,

I can tell you this about my smoking withdrawals; when I tried the 5 times to quit on my own, I had withdrawal problems more than I could handle such as double vision, memory loss, hearing echoes, right up to feeling like passing out. It was horrible and I could not function.

When I was hypnotised I had none of this. Not one little symptom. In fact, I had a hard time beleiving that I was ever a smoker at all.

I was hypnotised in a Howard Johnsons with about 40 other people in one hour. It was not a "special" session or anything.

I was told later by a PhD psychologist I knew from school that the susceptability of hypnotism differs among people.

The success also depends on how much the person wants to (subconsciously) change their behavior pattern.

It worked for me with cigs... maybe also with alchohol.

I'll let you know.

This is a very interesting topic. If it did work for the opiates, I don't know that it would take all the withdrawl symptoms away. I mean it could. Your mind is such a powerful thing. Nod proved it with the no w/d from smoking, and bad w/d's before. So, if it worked for smoking, it could work for the pills too. Your body/mind don't like drastic changes,(thats why we w/d)but if your mind could be shown a way to accept it and ignore it all together I guess it could work. If anyone tries it, please let me know. Nod- how much $ was it to be hypnotised? And, do they offer some sort of money back guarantee that it will work? I know every place probably has different rates and policies but I just wanna get a ballpark idea here.

At the time, this session was $35. It was a one time meeting, as I said in a Howard Johnsons.

Conversly, prior to the HoJo meeting, I contacted a private Hypnotist who said Smoking sessation required three visits totalling $105.

Even the $105 or whatever it is today would be worth the money if it worked.

I am going to find a private hypnotist in the Connecticut area and ask about quitting alcohol.

I will get back to this board with my results.

Are there any Connecticut Hypnotists surfing on this board?

I dont know if it would take away the WD but if it took away the hard part after the Wd...THE CRAVINGS then no one would ever slip right?? My Ideal plan would be Clonidine or those patches someone mentioned like Clonidine and Immodium and whatever else like Suboxone to get over the WD part...Then the Hypnotist to get rid of THE CRAVINGS and the desire for those pills and alcohol!! I would still pay bigtime for that cuz isnt it the CRAVINGS that make us slip?? Now you all got me thinking lol....and that can be dangerous take care my friends

Seems there are several others who are in the area of needing a psychological push to change their habits.

Something to consider...
