anybody else out there have spondyloarthopathy? it is a progressive inflammatory disease of the connective tissues in the body. i've had it all my life but was just diagnosed last fall, at the tender age of 49! i have recently (last six months) developed bilateral CTS as a result of the level of inflammation in my body. I am on 500mgs. of the disease modifying drug Azulfadine but 2000mgs. is the therapeutic dose. I had some nasty central nervous system problems when i hit the 1500 mark a couple months ago so we are very slowly working me back up to see if it happens again. Anyway, i was just wondering if anyone has had CTS develop in this way?

Claujuh,
I've had very sporadic (a few times a yr.) problems with carpal tunnel for the last 20 yrs. I never considered doing anything about it cause it was't a big problem, and it wasn't gettin worse. I don't have whatever it is that you have, but I developed several autoimmune diseases over a yr. ago which have caused a lot of swelling & inflamation in my hands (joints & connective tissue stuff). The carpal tunnel problem skyrocketed! The docs say it's because of the inflamation too.
Good luck, Ann

I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome too. Also have been recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. The CTS began several yrs. back but I thought it was a form of arthritis, not knowing why I would get "electrical shock" type feeling in the hands. Is that a symptom? It gradually became more frequent. Also when I woke up with pain and tingling in one hand I would blame it on fluid rentention or maybe poor circulation. Finally I mentioned it to my M.D. and he scheduled a Nerve Conduction Study. I declined, because I do not have insurance and it was a $375 test. He told me to wear a wrist splint when sleeping. It helped for a little while and then I knew I had to get the test. The Neurologist said it was not bad enough to operate yet. Now I find I have to wear the splint all the time. I am having the same problems with the other hand now.
What does the bi-lateral mean?
I would appreciate any advice you could give me.
Thank you, Lyndal

bilateral just means on both sides, in both hands/wrists. when i saw the surgeon last week and he did his own version of nerve testing, he said that i show evidence of nerve damage in the left hand, so that is why he is suggesting the surgery. the original nerve conduction study showed that the left hand is worse than the right. i just wish the sulfasalazine and vioxx together would take care of the inflammation. i understand that 2000mgs. a day of sulfasalazine is the therapeutic dose; i am only at 500 and when i worked up to 1500 before, i flew into a horrid depression...a central nervous system side effect that is "uncommon". lucky me. i see the rheumatologist on friday so i am going to ask if maybe the higher dose of sulfasalazine will decrease the inflammation enough so that carpal tunnel syndrome is not a problem any more. take care....

Ask your doctor for Neurontin. It helps withthe nerveproblem and the pain. Its helped my CT and my back pain. Good luck! P.S. I take 300 mgs of Neurontin 3 times a day.
