Hi, my name is Carlie and I'm 14 years old. I just got out of the hospital because I'm anorexic. It's hard to say if I was depressed before I was anorexic or if I'm depressed because of it, whatever the case I'm depressed never-the-less. I'm currently seeing a physiatrist and she would like me to go on an anti-depressant. I have many optitions she tells me. Prozac is the most effective in eating disorders, yet hasn't it been in the media??? Then there's Paxil, does that work??? Oh, and Celexa which my cousin takes and that seems to help her. I guess my question is, what anti-depressant works the best, or what are their side-effects? I really want to make a good desicion on which one to go with but I'd like some info about the different ones, or successes with them. If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. -Carlie- "Today doesn't have to be perfect but there's no reason why tomorrow can't be." IP: Logged |

Hi Carlie, I lurk but do not post on the ED board, and I just wanted to tell you how strong and inspirational your story was. I started tearing up at work. So now I can welcome you to my favorite board Prozac, Paxil, & Celexa are actually all related to each other, along with Zoloft and some others. They all work by allowing your brain to hold onto higher levels of a chemical "Serotonin" for longer before it is absorbed back into the brain. The family is "SSRI" (Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors). I'm sure your psychiatrist knows which Antidepressants to avoid since some of them actually aggravate anorexia. But you can read here that people complain all the time about SSRI's and weight gain (which is what you are looking for I imagine). I hope you have success with whichever medicine your doc and you choose. Good luck, IP: Logged |

Hi, I am sorry for all you have had to go through, and i am happy to see you are working towards recovery. i took Prozac for six days and it was awful, had horrible side effects... and, after quiting it, i couldnt eat for four weeks.. everyone says i couldnt have had withdrawls from going off it- yeah right. i took Doxepin for four years and really liked it... i hear it is good for eating disorders, but i dont know. good luck in your journey, and make sure you do your own research, and remember that your body is YOUR body. cheers, ------------------ "That the birds of worry and care fly over your head: This you cannot change; But that they build nests in your hair: This you can prevent." -Chinese Proverb IP: Logged |

Thanks ya'll. I actually went to my family doc today. He asked me a bunch of questions and stuff and found out what I was dealing with. He and my shrink (gosh I feel insane to have a shrink) thought that the 'New' Paxil was good for me and so that's what I'm on. I'm only on 12.5 right now because he said since I weight so little that's how much it may take to work, yet how long will it take to start working??? What should I expect while taking it?? Thanks for all of your help and support, ya'll are the greatest!!!! -Carlie IP: Logged |
