Hi I asked the other board about tis med but I thought that maybe you guys could help me. I have been on ativan .5 mg 3 times a day for 20 years. It helps me think clearly and keeps me grounded. But now my new physchiatrist wants me to start klonopin and I know nothing about it. She really was not even nice enough to explain, she just said that is is similiar to ativan, but lasts longer. Please, anyone out there that has taking this med, please let me know how you feel on it. Does it make you tired, or more down? I need to be keep even keeled due to my anxiety and depression. I cannot take any of the SSRI drugs, and she also wants to try me on liquid prosac and then build up to a amount that I can tolerate. I really don't want to take all of these drugs, especially since it seems so hard to get off of them when you want to. BUt, I do need help, so can anyone tell me about the prosac too? SOrry for all the questions, but am just so overwhelmed by all of this and it is so hard to cope for me Thank You

mandie,
5-HTP is far superior to prozac in my humble opinion. i have almost zero side effects, but i had unpleasant(but mild) side effects on all anti-depressants. 5-htp becomes serotonin in your body when it is activated by vitamin B6. buy it at any health food store.

prozac, paxil, zoloft all left me in a weird state. when i was awake i wasn't really awake and when i slept it was like i really wasn't sleeping

it is very nice and non-addictive, it calms a person down.

i know xanax gives a person a little "high" which makes it very dangerous for some people.
does ativan do the same thing?

i think klonopin can cause a person to become a little depressed -- but the effect is probably very mild. you probably have good tolerance to the benzos since you have been taking them for 20 years. the transition should be okay for you. i don't see a problem.

if there is a problem just beg her for the ativan if she doesn't give it to you start to cry -- that might work. half joking, but really i'm not. you do what you got to do -- to get what you need -- to cope.

WHat is this product HTP? Is it a vitamin, or a liquid, or what I have never heard of it. Is it safe to take with the klonopin? I just don't want to walk around like I am a zombie, that would be awful. Also, B6 is which vitamin? How much should I take to be effective. Does anyone else take these two items for their anxiety and depression? I would love to hear some success stories.

Hey Mike,

Did 5-HTP do any of the other things for you that it promotes such as weight loss or helping with insomnia?

I'd be interested in it for the depression and weight loss part but not the insomnia part.

5 -HTP is 5-hydroxy-L-Tryptophan..... it very closely resembles the amino acid tryptophan. tryptophan is converted to 5-htp in the body and then with the help of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) it is converted into serotonin. serotonin has been found to be in short supply in millions of people due to stress, poor dietary habits, genetics, chronic illness, etc.

5-htp came onto the market approximately 5 years ago and is slowly replacing prescription drugs like prozac.

it is far superior to prozac, zoloft, and the others in my opinion. it is a chemical that your body requires and demands. the side effect profile is far, far superior to prozac. it helps with general pain, IBS symptoms, fibromyalgia, anxiety, and causes far less sleep problems than the typical anti-depressant.

the onset of action is the only problem -- for some people it takes longer to exert its action. however, that was not the case with me. some people who have severe depression might be better off on a drug such as effexor, prozac, wellbutrin, etc.

your body does not demand prozac or paxil. however, some people (for many reasons) will do better on prescription drugs like prozac or effexor, etc.

i believe that treating depression or a chemical imbalance is all about trying to supply your body with as many of the raw ingredients that it needs so that it can manufacture the chemicals that it needs.

in the case of depression it has been proven that additional serotonin will help the majority of the people. in fact, autopsies on suicide victims consistantly show lowered serotonin receptor activity.

in some cases other chemicals need to supplied to stimulate the production of dopamine or norepinephrine. wellbutrin is effective for accomplishing that task, or a person can supplement with phenylalanine, tyrosine, and some sulfur amino acids (methionine).

ultimately, a well balanced diet will provide a valuable assist. proper digestion of food is also critical for any long term success.

psychological and social factors might also have to be addressed.
(concerning weight loss -- if you are an "anxious eater" then it could very well help with weight loss)

I'm not really big on all the natural stuff, just because it didn't do much for me - instead I'm pumped up on drugs.

A note about the klonopin (and any other drugs) - be sure to pay attention to any changes in the way you act or any side-effects. On klonopin, after I'd been on it for a month, I started noticing that I turned manic - couldn't sleep, had to keep moving and just HAD to do something. On a side note, before that I'd never been manic, and never have been since getting off it. Good luck, and do whatever is necessary to keep yourself healthy!

Hi

If the ativan is working for you, why change?

Yes, mania is a paradoxial and tolerance withdrawal symptom of benzodiazepines. The Ashton Manual is now free online, with lots of information on benzos like ativan and klonopin.

Another good supplement for depression is fish oil.

I actually take Klonopin. I take it once at night 1mg, as apposed to taking xanax 3 times per day at 1mg. (3mg Total) Im using Klonopin to help me withdraw from xanax. The only good thing about Klonopin (that I find) is that I only have to take it once and forget im even on it for the rest of the day. I didn't take it last night and im having breathing problems already. lol ::shrugs::

please stay away from the benzos if you possibly can! and never stop them abruptly! I'm still tapering off of them after being on them for years! withdrawal can be terrible if not done right. also, you build up a tolerance to these drugs which means after awhile you need to up the dose to get the same effect as the initial dose! the doctors never tell you this til it's too late! good luck

I take Klonopin .25 mgs twice per day. At first it made me a bit foggy and tired, but that went away quickly. Now, it just helps relax me and is good for the anxiety.

The most studies of benzo-type drugs for treating anxiety have been with Klonopin. It's been considered one of the best in it's class (benzodiazepine's) for anxiety.

Also, don't drink alcohol went on them as this will intensify the effects.

It's a good med in my opinion. But I have heard that all benzo's can be addictive. However, if you don't have a dependent type personality and you take them in low doses for a specific reason, they should be well tolerated. Just taper off them slowly when you want to stop. Your Dr. will tell you all about it.
