I'm 28 years old and was diagnosied with type 2 diabetes in April 2001. In the months prior to finding out that I had the disease, I noticed that my normally thick hair began to thin out. Hair was falling out all over my head but more noticeable on the top front area of my scalp. At the time I was also suffering from depression and was under alot of stress. The doctor seems to think that with the combination of the diabetes and the stress this is the reason for the hair loss. I've also had my thyroid checked and that result came back fine. I would just like to hear from any other person or people out there that this may have happened to. My doctor said that with any type of chronic illness, such as diabetes, it is possible to experience hair loss. Some hair is begining to grow back but it is much thinner and finer than it use to be. If anyone out there has been through this or knows someone that has been through this please let me know. I would love to hear any suggestions or comments that may help "speed" up the process of getting my own hair back. Thank you!!!! IP: Logged |

Hi, Sorry I don't know for sure, but I never heard of hair loss from diabetes. I would think it would be most likely due to stress, that I have heard of. And of course stress will increase your blood sugars and make control more difficult. I would say the best thing is to try your best to decrease the stresses in your life. I know eaiser said than done. Anyway best of luck. Barb IP: Logged |

Barb... Thanks so much for replying to my post. It is very uncommon for diabetes to cause hair loss but it is possible. My mom has suffered with diabetes for almost 30 years and in all that time she never experienced hair loss. I guess that I'm one of the few "lucky ones" that this happens to. LOL. But I'm trying to gain control over this and hopefully it won't gain control over me. And I do know that trying to lead a stress free life is important also. But thank you for your thoughts and well wishes!

Hi Michelle, probably at this point you're freaking out about losing your hair. My wife was too.She was diagnosed with diabetes november 2000, she was worrying about losing hair and also a sort of bad dandruff due to skin dryness. However, things went back to normal as soon as she hit diabetes in control and safe levels.Of course it took a while to grow hair back but eventually she succeeded. Don't worry ![]() IP: Logged |

You can experience hair loss from certain drugs. AVANDIA is a major "culprit". I had to discontinue it because it was so bad. Avandia worked well to control my blood sugar so I am now struggling with other drugs to keep in under control. At least I have my hair! IP: Logged |
