Has anyone ever heard of Aspartame Toxicity? I have recently read alot about it on the web. Not sure how reliable all this is, so I asked a few doctors. Both neurologists that I spoke to had heard of it and believed in it totally. My endocrinologist hadn't heard of it and didn't seem to think that it was any big deal. In any event, I decided to try removing anything with Aspartame in it from my diet. My friend also did the same thing. It has been about 10+ days for both of us. I have experienced a few "withdrawl" type symptoms, aches in the joints, mild headache, etc. My friend was experiencing several MS-like symptoms that appear to have improved over the last 2-week period. She is sleeping better, etc. Both of us were tested at birth for the Phenylalanine sensitivity. Neither of us has this sensitivity. I am simply looking for anyone else that has heard anything about Aspartame Toxicity. I don't want to argue with anyone about it, etc. I would like to know if you have checked the web and read any of the available sites, as well as the FDA website. I have and felt that there was enough evidence for me to stop using artificial sweetners all together. I switched to a natural, plant extract from a plant called Stevia? I think that's the name. It's not bad and seems to work fine in coffee and iced tea. [This message has been edited by moderator2 (edited 09-18-2002).] IP: Logged |

I don't know much about aspartame toxicity, but I have experienced severe diahrea after eating or drinking foods with artificial sweeteners in them. It doesn't take long-about 10 minutes before I have to find a toilet. I used to drink coffee with milk and sweet and low. After about half a cup I'd get bad stomach cramps and have to run to the bathroom. I always thought it was the milk that was bothering me, until one day I had a cup without the sweetener, and it didn't bother me at all. Scary stuff. On a related note, I've found that some fruits and vegetables that look sort of too perfect or too large can lead to problems as well. I am assuming some of these veggies are genetically or chemically enhanced. They have absolutely no imperfections, they are larger than life, and alot of times are less tasty. Anyway, whenever I buy these items I marvel over how perfect they are until I eat them. I usually get very severe drops in my blood sugar after eating them. I can eat the same vegetable purchased from another store on another day, and it doesn't bother me at all. Its pretty scary and I try to be more choosy about my produce. I hate to sound paranoid about these things-but people please be careful. IP: Logged |

I am so glad to see someone bring this up. If you have done your homework, you know the true nature of things made with Nutrasweet/Aspartame. I avoid all products with the little Nutrasweet symbol because I don't want to be preserved from the inside out. I have been called radical, but if a person will study the facts as presented by the medical authorities, my perspective will be validated. Please do your own study on a website other than the manufacture's. This stuff tastes great, but is it going to help you in the control of your diabetes? It will tear you up if you really learn what this stuff really is. Call me Mr. I drink water... IP: Logged |

Splenda may not be for everyone. I have had IB problems in the past, so that may explain my reaction. I ate one "candy" bar made with Splenda and was in the bathroom the rest of the night with severe stomach and intestinal cramps. Also, my daughter who doesn't have IB problems, had one fruit flavored drink made with Splenda and had the bathroom problem too. I also stay away from aspartame. I tend to be sensitive to non-natural substances. I can tell when I have accidentally sipped the wrong soda because my tongue and lips will immediatly go numb. Kind of like medicine head and later I will become an air-head (can't concentrate). It definitely had a bad effect on my brain so I stay far, far away. IP: Logged |

Since I know there is a snowball's chance I will be able to drink only water or flavored spring water - i researched as much as possible the effects of all the artificial sweetners and the splenda. There is alot of information warning against aspartame (such as Dr. atkins warning), but i have seen published studies (and there are many) that say aspartame has no ill effects and it is deemed safe and approved by the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, and the World Health Organization. Splenda started out highly recommended since it was a natural derivative of sugar. I am now seeing many web-sites sponsered by doctors and nutritionists saying not to use it. Seems we all will just have to make a personal decision on it. Saccharin seems to have fallen under the radar. Go figure. Jintfan IP: Logged |

Hello, I can share a personal story with everyone about my experience with aspartame. It was about 10 years ago. I was a diet coke addict. I drank about 2 liters a day. Oh, I loved the taste so much and began noticing that I seemed more and more thirsty when I wasn't drinking my diet cokes. I'd estimate I drank this amount for about one year. Then one day I decided I was going to quit drinking diet coke. Mainly because I had read a article about aspartame tocicity. It was in a newsletter I received in the mail from Dr. Julian Whitaker. People call me radical as well. I'm really very conservative. If you'll do your own research with this wonderful tool we call the Internet you will learn about things like, "Monsanto (the maker's of aspartame) pay the FDA huge amounts of money to say their product is "safe." Ultimately it comes down to the fact that each individual must make their own choice whether to consume this product or not. I choose NOT! And I can't honestly say I feel the FDA has the best interest about my health in mind. Tenntod IP: Logged |

[QUOTE]Originally posted by pburgbeanie: [B]Has anyone ever heard of Aspartame Toxicity? I have recently read alot about it on the web. Here's the deal, I drank diet sodas for 16 years. I would say from 2-4 liters a day. My wife made me a detox tea from herbs and stuff. Sweet Jesus have mercy, I thought He would take me then and there! Since stopping the diet sodas I have regain my memory, stamina and clearity of thought. Some can handdle that stuff, I can't. In case anyone is wondering the diet sodas did not cause the onset of my type ll. Here in Hawai'i we eat a very high carb diet. It's not a meal if we don't have a lb of rice! Hope this helped.
