I've had these aches off & on for a while. It's right below my rib cage in the upper part of my abdomen. It's not really apain and it isn't there all the time. It's more like a mild ache, probably a 1 on the scale of pain as it doesn't double me over nor does it really distract me from doing anything, I just know it's there. Sometimes it'll be in the lower part of my abdomen, still on the right side. I don't know it this is related or not, but I, most days, have a stronger ache between my should blades, but I sit at a computer most of the day, have bad posture and GOd granted me a little more up top than most, so I figure that's my three strikes for the back pain! haha. But I'm scared of it being liver cancer or something serious. Any ideas, suggestions? I'm probably going to call the doctor today to see if I can get an appointment in the next couple of days.

Hi,

If you are having back pain and pain in your upper belly, then this could be gallbladder related. Are you having trouble eating fatty or spicy food?

Sorry it took so long to get back, I haven't been on my computer until yesterday. I went to the doctor Monday 5/20/02 and he pushed and poked & I thought he was going to push my organs up through my nose! haha. He said it's a slight possibility of gallstones, but he didn't really feel anything abnormal there or in my liver, but just to rule everything out, he did some blood work & I hope to hear from that today or tomorrow and Tuesday I go for a complete abdominal ultrasound. He said that he anticipates it all to cmoe back normal and this is like IBS or intestinal issues that I'll have to deal with by watching my diet.

I've always had troulbe with fatty or spicy foods. SPicy foods gear up my GERD and fatty foods sometimes make my stomach hurt. I have, in the past, been on tagamet, donnatol, previcid, not all at the same time, but it may be something I need to look at again.

Does all that sound reasonable?

Hi,

Yes, it sounds reasonable. I have problems with eating spicy and fatty food and eating too much fat makes my belly hurt too, so I keep away from it.

Anyway, hope your labs and USS come back ok.

Good luck and keep us posted?

Take care

Sarah

I got my blood test results back Friday and they were all in the normal range! Yea! Today I have my abdominal ultrasound, but the doctor doesn't seem concerned, it's just more of a precaution. I'm hoping that the blood results indicate that it's just a intestinal problem like he said. DOes this sound good?

Well, I went for my ultrasound this morning and the liver looked good according to the technician (she was so sweet). I'm glad of that. I think I was more worried about that than anything else. She did say she saw a couple of small stones in my gall bladder. So now what. The doctor should get in touch with me this week with the final results. Any suggestions of what could come next?

Doctor called last night and said it was definitely gall stones and he strongly suggested while I'm "young & healthy" to go ahead and have the gallbladder taken out and it'll prevent bigger issues in the future. DOes this sound like wise advice?

Hi,

Your Doctor's advice sounds good. Often if you let gallstones sit around, especially if you are having symptoms they could become trapped in your bile duct causing more problems. I had my gallbladder removed last Oct. went will 3 tiny scars. The biggest pain is the gas they trap in your abdomen, but it reapsorbs in a couple of days. I also would suggest having a intraoperative cholangiogram will in surgery. They can see if a stone is in your bile duct and hopefully remove it will your asleep.

Hope this helps,

Michelle

I too have a very similar pain under my right rib cage..and I have been thru all kinds of test, catscan, endoscopy, ultra sound, I do have gerd, but doctors could find nothing else, gallbadder, liver, spleen all look fine. I also work at a desk all day, then come home and work on one. Doctor thinks it is all skeletal, from repetive right arm strain, because the middle of my back bothers me also. I can't really call it a pain, more like a discomfort. Now yesterday I painted and was doing some stretching and today it is bothering me and tender to touch..like a bruise.
Boy ever since I turned 40 I get the weirdest things

Hi Reds,

Sounds like you need to try taking a little more exercise, if you don't already. You could also try improving your posture whilst sitting.

Arnica is very good to take to get rid of that bruised feeling you said you had.

Hey Reds -

Amen to the over 40 thing! I think I've spent more time with the Dr in the past 3 years than in the previous 40. Especially with digestive problems. It looks like I have to give up alcohol, caffeine and carbonated beverages. At least I seem to feel better when I stay away from thos things.

By the way, does anyone ever get shoulder pain in addition to other symptoms? I'm not sure it's related becuase I too sit behind a computer all day at a desk and it may be muscle related. When I use FlexAll it seems to help. Just curious. Thanks.

Hi Robert,

It is not unusual to find that cutting out caffeine, fizzy drinks and alcohol will all help your stomach. I too have cut out all fizzy drinks, have drastically cut my alcohol intake and caffeine and my stomach is a lot better as a result.

I too have neck and shoulder pain. If you work at a computer for most of the day, then it is most likely to be muscular tension. However, my thought is that a lot of people carry tension in their neck and shoulders and sometimes this tension can also be transferred to your stomach. If you neck and shoulders are bad, then your stomach could be too. I find that if I get tense or stressed, sometimes my stomach is quite tense too and this causes general pain and a bad stomach. I also have should and neck pain too. Basically, you just have to realise and try to relax.

You may benefit from taking a break from the computer and doing some slow neck exercises. Circular motions and the same with the shoulders. Also whilst sitting, maybe undo a belt or tight clothing and really let your belly relax too. This is really useful in avoiding a lot of belly ache that you might get otherwise.

Hope this helps. I do these exercises regularly and find them really helpful?

Thanks for the suggestions Sarah! What I'd like to do is take a 20 year break from the computer, but there is that nasty business about paying for food and shelter and retirement. Not to mention at 40+ I'm too old to learn anything new and marketable.

Just to be on the safe side, I'm going to see my GP today and ask about the symptoms. I've also been on a water pill, hydrochloro-something, and my stomach hasn't been the same since I started it. A fews years back, I took Prilosec for Gastritis and almost passed out so I think I have a very sensitive stomach. I'm sure the medication is not helping.

I will try the exercises and see if it helps. Thanks again!
