Hello -

My father is 70 and just had his gall bladder removed. Other than this he is in perfect health.

He still seems to have those awful crampy attacks after he eats. Is this normal???

I thought after the gall bladder was removed that he would not have any cramps.

We can't seem to get his doctor to return our calls.

any help would be great!

Thank you.
Laura

Hi, Laura Jane. Yeah, he can still have those pains after surgery - how long ago was surgery? I didn't feel completely recovered until about 6-8 weeks afterward. Also, his GB may not have been the problem in the first place - sometimes doctors just have to make a "best guess." GB surgery is not guaranteed to take away all digestive complaints, but maybe your dad just needs more time?

Good luck to him,
Katie G

Hello - Thank you for replying to my message. My father had his GB removed in the middle of July. I would think by now he would not have cramp attacks.

Would you suggest he go back to the doctor? Thank you.

Laura

Hi LauraJane,

I had my gallbladder removed a little over four years ago and I swear it grew back! Just kidding, but on and off I get the same achiness, irritated feeling I did before I had the surgery. Unlike most people, I never had a so called "gallbladder attack". I just had constant pain under my right rib. I had a diagnosis of a non-functioning gallbladder. It would not empty and that's what was causing the pain.

I went back to my surgeon about three months later complaining of the same pain as before. She assured me that there was nothing else going on inside of my body but did put me through a series of tests just to put my mind at ease. I had another ultrasound; upper GI; and a barium enema. All came back normal with just some slight diverticulosis of the colon. My doctor told me that sometimes even after having the gallbladder taken out, digesting fats can be troublesome and hence the pain is back because you don't have a gallbladder to help with digestion. Your liver takes over that job. She also said that occasionally a stone will still form in the duct that will eventually pass.

My pain is not constant but I've noticed that if I eat anything with mayo or peanuts; anything fatty fried; I will develop that achiness once again. I'm feeling good now, but a few days ago I got into the salted mixed nuts and paid for it dearly over the last day. No more nuts for me!

I think your best bet would be to call the doctor anyway just to see what they suggest.

Hi again, LauraJane. Yeah, I would take your dad back to the doctor just to rule out anything else going on. I occasionally have pain in the area my GB was, even 5 years after surgery (nowhere near as severe as the pain of GB "atttacks" were). I guess it's what they call "phantom pain", but to put your dad's mind at ease, it might be a good idea to have him checked out.

Good luck,
Katie G

I had my gallbladder out this past march after 4 years of "denial". I did not follow the typical pain. It was always center under the breast bone and would accure any time of day most to wake me up in the 3-5 am time frame. No high fat foods didn't set it off. So i went into denial for 4 years. I was havingmore pain so i decided togo ahead witht he surgery, at least it would be a step. It did help wonders. In 6 months, i've had maybe 2 minor attacks. Yes, your liver is now doing the job of the gallbladder in addition to it's own. Something i've tried, got on internet, was using a tablespoon of virgin olive oil with equal parts of lemon juice (for the palette). every night before i go to bed. It is suppose to help eliminate or flush the bile and stones from the liver and ducts. I've been using this for 3 months and have had no problems. However, i do have to take a veg. laxative daily or i suffer from extreme constipation since my surgery. Hope this helps

To pmaul120,
Did you do this flush "after" your gallbladder surgery??? If so, for how long did you have to do this? How did you know you still had sludge or a stone remaining??? You also stated that in 6 mos after your GB removal, you had 2 minor attacks, could you please explain what those attacks were like? Your answers would be very much appreciated..Thank you..
Sandy
