Is it possible to be allergic to vinegar? (white vinegar only)?? For the past 2 years we have been trying to figure out why my daughter (age 14) gets terrible stomach pains for HOURS (on and off) after eating a sub sandwich (from a deli - ham, salami and provolone with lettuce and oil and vinegar)and from deli or restaurant chicken salad sandwiches. last time we were convinced that the only 2 things those sandwiches had in common were lettuce - so she removed the lettuce from yesterday's chicken salad sandwich at the diner, within a half hour after eating it she had those stomach pains again! There's no nausea, and no gas and the pains are in the upper abdomen(no kind of gas pills or antacids work). She uses APPLE CIDER vinegar at home once in a while (taking a teaspoon of it, straight - for hiccups or she heard it helps with losing weight) and that doesn't bother her at all.

I don't know whether it qualifies as an "allergy" or what, but I pinned down vinegar as causing me digestive problems also - distress in the stomach and through the small intestines, too.

Basically, if your daughter has problems with vinegar, it would not be an allergy, but an intolerance. There is a difference, as a true allergy would produce a classic IgE reaction. However, IgE does not affect the stomach, whereas IgG, so if you had a blood test and mixed the IgG with the vinegar, then you would probably get a positive result.

I have had a lot of problems recently with different foods causing me stomach pains and diarrhea and I had some intolerance tests done and found that I had lactose intolerance, dairy and wheat. Since cutting these out of my diet, my stomach has been fine.

It's possible she may have a hiatial hernia. People with H.hernia's should not take apple cider vinegar tablets, so maybe she has one since she is reacting to vinegar.
