I had gallbladder surgery 5/2002, it was full of stones. About one month later my stool started being yellow and loose. I do not think I have had a natural color of stool since. But yesterday the stool color was a very wierd color of green. I had not eaten anything to make it change like this. But last night it was back to yellow loose again. I have read that this could be a blockage in the bile duct. Would this seem to be a correct assumption?

It's probably not anything. Sometimes our stools are just different. A blockage would be quite painful and highly unlikely almost a year later.

The loose stools is a problem in gallbladder surgery for about 5-10% of people. It's caused by excess bile. That's the reason for the yellow/green color. To stop the loose stools, doctors use bile acid sequestrants. Questran and Colestid are the drugs used to stop the loose stools.

Read this link to understand it better.

Ditto for what rsg says. I take Colestid (pill form of Questran) and finally have normal stools again after 5 years (!) of yellow, loose runny stools.

So what would it mean for someone who still has there gallbladder to have yellow stool. Bile is yellow, so it cant be blocked.

Hey there farscape. If you have yellow runny stools with a GB still in, you may be suffering from Habba syndrome. Basically, it means your GB is malfunctioning and dumping too much bile into the small intestine. There's not a lot of info out there about Habba syndrome (a few articles on the 'net), but a Dr. Habba discovered that some people with their GBs still in, demonstrated the bile salt diarrhea syndrome just like those who've had their GBs removed. Although I had several tests on my GB (before it was removed) that seemed "normal", I still had a severely inflamed GB that gave me significant digestive problems. Unfortunately, I also suffered from bile salt diarrhea after surgery, but it's all under control with Colestid.

Good luck to you,
Katie G

Is Colestid something you take everyday? For the rest of your life?

As much as I've read about bile salt diarrhea, it appears that taking Colestid will be a life-long commitment. I've read that if you stop taking the Colestid, and if you truly have BSD, then you will start having diarrhea again after stopping. Also, according to what I've read about Colestid, it's safe to take forever.

I can tell you this however - I plan to take it forever, even if long-term effects haven't been fully researched, because it gave me a normal life back that doesn't cause me to focus on the nearest bathroom.
