Ok I just read like 5 posts with your name on it asking 5 different questions. First what is your desired weight? What are your goals? Seems like you are overweight which in fact I can help but at 13 years of age I will need you to make some sacrafices. IP: Logged |

Ok well I am 13 years old and weigh 160lbs. In health class I found my ideal weight is 108-116. I am way over weight! I need some exercises and advice. [This message has been edited by moderator1 (edited 01-22-2002).] IP: Logged |

Well I'm not going to tell you to hit the weights considering your age but you can do cardio and eat right to make a difference. Try to do cardio four times a week at 30 minutes. You are in school so your best bet would be after. Cut out all your fats and sugars. You got to start eating every 3 hours to get your metabolism going. Have very small meals. Here are the foods to eat: skim milk, fruits/vegtables, egg whites, fish, red meat, chicken, etc.... Seeing as your only 13 you are proabably lost with all this info but that's the best I can put it. You might want to actually talk to your doctor. IP: Logged |

Listen, Here's my theory, take it or leave it. I am 45 years old and I dont' believe you have even stopped developing into an adult yet. The ideal weight deal is for fully developed adults. I think you are putting way too much focus on this right now. Enjoy yourself as a new teenager but just don't over do it cause then it will be a problem. You were just 12 a year ago and I think you are buying into all this thin stuff that the media pushes. You will lose that "baby fat" eventually, but I think you are way too young to be asking about being overweight. I don't see many 13 year olds at the gym trying to tone up and such. Whatever! Stomach exercises may sound like a resolution that's too simple. That's because they are. There are five keys. 1. Nutrition. Watch what you eat. Be conscious about it. If you want to lose weight badly enough, this will not present a problem. 2. Water. Drink lots of it. At least 1 gallon per day. That's 128 oz, or 16 cups. 3. Cardiovascular activity. This is the most important form of exercise you can do. Running, cycling, rowing... whatever, as long as it gets your heart rate up for more than 20 minutes. 4. Stomach exercises. Unfortunately, these will not be very effective until you manage to slim down. You need to go target all the major stomach muscle groups from a variety of different directions. The old situp may have been seen as effective decades ago, but it's outdated. 5. Weight lifting. Muscle burns fat. Keep in mind two things here, though. 1) Just because muscle burns fat doesn't mean that's all you should concentrate on. I know people who hear this and think "Well, I'll just lift weights and not do cardio." Very bad idea. 2) Your build, which I assume is husky, likely makes it much easier for you to build muscle but also easier for you to retain fat. That again goes back to not emphasizing strength training. Is 13 too young to lift weights? That depends on who you ask. I know that I personally am now trying to make up for lost time and would've loved to have lifted weights at that age. If not now, save it for a year or two, but make sure to follow the first 4 steps (with an emphasis on the first 3). As far as "ideal weight," don't put too much faith in it. The ideal weight is just a set of numbers that cannot possibly be applied to everyone. If you're happy with the way you look, that's the ideal. I disagree that you are too young to be worrying about being overweight. If you don't take care of it now, you will be worrying about it when you're 14 and then when you're 15 and so on. If you are predisposed to being overweight, that won't change with age. It will only change with your ability to make it change. IP: Logged |

Well weight lifting at a young age can cause growth problems as heavy weights can close growth plates... IP: Logged |

At 160 pounds without the weight showing much, even if is a problem, I'm assuming height is not an issue in this particular case. IP: Logged |

Ok I know weightlifting will not stop you from growing BUT if you were to injure your growth plates while lifting weight then you can decrease your chances of getting taller. IP: Logged |

I really don't think you have anything to worry about - especially at such a young age. You still have so much of your life ahead of you. I can understand that you want to tone up and slim down, but as hzebo mentioned, you're not fully developed yet. Your body still has so many changes to go through before you are an adult. However, having said all that, if you're really serious about losing some weight, then start a really simple routine. Remember, you don't want to start an exercise program where you workout like crazy, lose a lot of weight, get tired of the exercise routine and gain back twice as much weight as you lost (I know...been there, done that....more than once This is what I've started doing:
This helps tone you up and brings up your cardio. Just remember, don't rely on the scale too much. Working out tones your muscles and muscle has more mass than fat. So, although you may not see a change in your weight when you look at the scale, you will have lost your fat and toned your muscles (I always measure myself by how my clothes fit because by looking at the scale, it appears as if I've gained more weight, when in effect, I've toned up and lost my fat. So, my clothes fit a lot better!). Just remember, you've got so much more to think about. You've barely hit puberty...and let me tell you, that changes A LOT of things in your body. Take your time and start things slowly. You have so many other things in life enjoy right now...start with those. IP: Logged |

Another suggestion, Find an active sport you like, soccer would be a great one as an example. Regardless of the sport your coach will be able to help you trim up. God Bless, Mace IP: Logged |

Do about 80 or 100 ab crunches *sit ups* with your feet on the ground and your knees bent and your back lying on the floor put your hands behind your head and slowly raise... if this does not work then you could get those new ab roller dilly's that look like roller skates that you hold on to and slide alone the floor that stretch your ab's. Good Luck! IP: Logged |

Hi, My daughter also went through this. She did like you when developing gained tremendous weight. She got very bummed out about it. How did she loose it. Well a whole lot of positive suggestions, stayed away from those people that bothered her about it and did about 1/2 hour of taebo workout everyday. Took her about 6 months to get down to 130, she took off 40lbs then it just all started to come off. She looks great, feels great and is very proud of her accomplishment. Now she just seems to like doing any fitness stuff. Fun stuff, like playing tennis, walking, swimming, cause she knows she benifits from it. She did NOT try to change her eating habits too much becaus AS she started to workout and loose weight she became less interested in food and seemed to get "full" on a whole lot less then what she use to. Seriously if you would like to chat at me or her, let us know, I can relate to all those feelings you are having, and SO can she! Hi There OK. Forget that stuff about hundreds of stomach crunches. That will leave you so sore you won't be able to do anymore for a week! I'd also give any weight training thoughts away for a few years. At your age, you should be out playing some sport that involves cardio vascular exertion. Do some aerobics, go for a brisk walk...get that heart pumping! Drop most of the sugars from your diet, eat more fruit and veggies and drink lots of water. Easy huh?
