No such thing as spot reducing.. You will have to lower overall bodyweight.. Work on your lower abs and build some muscle there which will help you burn some fat.

Wait a minute. You just said there's no such thing as spot reducing, but then you tell him to build abdominal muscle. That is incorrect. Just because you build muscle in your abdominal area doesn't mean the fat in that area will be burned first. Fat is burned in the reverse order of how it's gained, meaning that the places you gain fat first are the last places you lose it. For men, it's the midsection around the stomach that is the first area to gain and the last to lose. In order to lose the fat around your stomach, you need to reduce your overall body fat and build muscle which in turn aids in burning fat. However, building one set of muscles like your abs isn't enough. You need to develop all major muscle groups. Only then will your muscle mass increase significantly. I'd have to check, but I believe every pound of muscle you have burns 35 calories per day. So unless you can pack on 5 pounds of muscle just in your midsection, you're better off building all your muscles.

From my experience building certain parts of your body does help burn fat. I do not call this spot reducing. Spot reducing is more like working those abs to burn the fat. What I am saying is you can build some muscle there and also all around your body and in time that will help you burn fat.

I have never seen anyone lose fat in one area by working the muscles in that area. Where fat loss occurs is all about diet, exercise and genetics. A lot of women train based on the fallacy that if they do a gazillion glute exercises, their butt will shrink and tone. Then get discouraged when all that work doesnt do anything for the butt that they can _see_ because they havent changed anything else (like diet or cardio). You have to work with your body's blueprints, as annoying as it is.
Case in point, notice that on those ab-contraption commercials with the "before" and "after" pics... almost always there is a tiny disclaimer on the screen indicating that the results from aforementioned contraption are in addition to diet and exercise.
Just something to consider.

I think he means integrate cardio to get rid of the fat with a muscle building workout for abs. You need to work the ab muscles while your doing your cardio, say for instance running, in order to keep yourself strong. And then once you've burned away some of the fat the muscle will be defined.

Also what he's saying is that by building the muscle up while doing the cardio, you end up raising your resting metabolism and therefore burning more calories overall (and losing weight around the middle).

Did that help?

I don't think he contradicted himself. Working the abs is not in any way spot reducing. That doesn't work at all, but you can make the abs stronger and more defined while doing cardio at the same time.
