I'm posting for my uncle, he is 32 and this started 2 or 3 years ago...He was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, I know alittle about the disease, I study medical, but only cardiac, I've put somet ime into studying on this disease.....

My uncle has food 'allergies' ..not only food, chemicals, smells, and its become so chronic he has been put on a diet, so severe its limitied to almost nothing but organic rice, Soy milk... He has not had normal 'human food' in 2 years, and has lost about 100+ lbs...He was a body builder, he does not have much joint pain becuase of his years of lifting weights, but now has lost much weight but is gaining it back well the best he can. What happens is he will eat something containing a SMALL TRACE of a ingredident he is allergic to and he will go into hours/days of intense itching and breaking out in little red sores on his body, this itching causes him to go into 2 or 3 days and even more sometimes with NO SLEEP.... Its very depressing for him and the people that have to see him go through it, he lives with his parents still who are having a hard time coping with this. His FEW foods he can eat have to be cooked a certain way...If he smells perfume; he will have chest pains and itch ALL DAY.. He describes it as a tingling all over, someitmes a burning itch, and often a 'crawling' feeling under his skin with some pain (non-muscle) as a allergic reaction to these foods/smells.. This can last from hours to days--- he has to have a special vibrating bed just to get a few hours of sleep at a time... His few foods are getting expensive and hard to find, he cannot drink normal water, only purified...This is a drain on his life, causing him to go into severe depression - and a drag on his older parents because they have to take care of him. He had a few mental illness such as bi-polar disorder and depression already..he cannot take the medicines to treat them becuase he will 'itch' for days and have no sleep until he is to the point of wanting to die...like I said, he does not suffer form the usual 'pains' in those spots through out his body like most patients do, doctors said it was because of his fitness..I know this sounds a lot like mutiple chemical senitivity, but it's been said to be allergies to practically EVERYTHING he can touch, smell, and mostly eat... Anybody experience ANYTHING similar???? And what can he do? He can't take meds to treat it because it will stir him up in itching and insomnia...appreicate ANY feedback or advice, it seems we've reached a dead end with him on this disease...

Dear Aero:
I feel for your uncle. Chemical sensitivities can turn your life upside down. I too have many chemical/foods that cause problems for me too. The only thing I can recommend is the following:
book: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity by Pamela Reed
(lots of good info and resources)
You may want to check with this organization:
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine, phone# 214-368-4132, website: http://www.ehcd.com
I have no idea how good they are or what info you can get but it's worth a try. It's a start. The best to you and your uncle. Dawn

The information that you have posted is interesting. Maybe I can help.

About 8 years ago, I discovered some sensitivity to my mercury-silver dental amalgams, and had them all removed. It's a long story which I have repeated many times on this healthboard.

The short version of this, is that I was told by a doctor to not run more than a 100 yards over 23 years ago, and now I run about 19.5 miles a week. I had severe FM symptoms, gum disease and loose teeth.

You can read more of what I had recently written in the dental section to Kellybelly. I don't know if your uncle has these type of "silver" fillings (which typically contain more mercury than silver), but I thought that I would let you know just in case you would want to look more into it.

If you do, please let me know. The smallest amount of mercury is extremely posionous, much more so than lead.

Both of our daughters, depending what doctor we go to, with irritiable bowel syndrome, environmental and food allergies, undifferentiated somatoform disorder, and our latest is fibromyalgia syndrome.
The eldest also has asthma and very acute peanut allergy along with other foods. The peanut allergy was first identified when she was 2-3 years old. As she grew older with allergy became more acute. She also became sensitised to more foods, especially those related to peanut (soy, kidney, green, and peas). By the time she got to high school, the peanut allergy was so bad that smelling the breath of a student who had eaten a candy bar with peanuts in it before class made her pale and faintish, and she wouldn't be able to attend classes at the next day (upset stomach, diarrhea). Needless to say, she did not attend high school, physically, after we figured out what was happening. Found a new doctor. This doctor was participating in a study of Enzyme Potentiated Desensitization (this has been used in Europe and Canada for over 20 years). This is a treatment that works on common air borne, food, and environmental allergies. It is small injections beginning with one every two months. The treatment takes 3 years or more. It is not a fun treatment. It brings on your symtoms for the first couple of weeks after the injection. There is also a strict diet and other things to avoid around the injection times. For both of our daughters, by the second injection, we could see improvement in their conditions. The eldest can now smell peanut without getting sick at all. She can even get peanut oil on her skin and doesn't get a rash (used to blister). It really did help her. Unfortunately, this treatment was determined by the present administration of the government to not be effective and is no longer available in the United States.
I would suggest looking into food allergy desensitization. There may be other methods being currently used other than the one we tried. It seems if the cycle of widening sensitivity can be slowed or reversed, it would help.
By the way, lack of good sleep and allergies are both causes psychiatric smyptoms, such as depression and anxiety. They also cause many other symptoms that you wouldn't normally think would be attributable.
