Hello everyone!...Another topic that everyone seems to what to discuss. What are your most prominent symtoms? Lets all share and compare...this will be interesting. We should try and write it out in list form to make it easier.. As for me...I have to make out my list later because my hands are aching...and that's one to go on my list!....Later....Cyn*

My prominent symptoms are migraine headaches, forgetfulness, stressfull situations which send me deeper into pain; irritable bowel and bladder [have even had occasions where I will be out somewhere, get really horrible stomach pains and then I mess my pants and have to go home right then. This would happen at work, on my way to work or even while at the stores shopping]; pain at night in entire left leg, but it has been known at times to move to the right side. Trouble walking without tripping "over nothing." I've even fallen into my bookcases in my bedroom for no reason. Dropping things like crazy--to the point that I have to get new dishes. Can't think of anything right now, but if I do, I will amend my page.

My main symptoms are pain and swelling in my left had and wrist, aches in my shoulder joints on both sides, pain in my neck and upper back, pain in my knees and ankles, pain in my hips, pain in my forearms which are sensitive to touch, advanced degenerative disk disease and a herniated disc in my lower back, eczema, constant exhaustion, irritable bowl & bladder, restless legs syndrome, dry eyes and mouth. My migraines I have had since I was 14 have quit since I take so much anti-inflammatory meds, (It was either the meds or the divorce that got rid of my migraines, could be from both.) I too feel the more stress in my life, the more pain I have, and after my recent surgery I have had a lot more stress. I feel stiff all the time, especially when I sit for an extended period. That's all I can think of right now.

Hey guys does anyone else find it funny that in order to get a firm Diagnosis from a doctor you must react to at least 11 of the 18 pressure points and not one person put them on their top ten list?

Hi Everyone,
I'm a new member and I have been scanning the post - it's like looking in a mirror!! I don't feel so alone now - it's difficult having a "disorder" that doesn't show and trying to function in a world of "healthy people" who cannot possibly understand how you are feeling. It is really difficult to list "only ten" symptoms but I'll try.
1)headaches
2)chronic overall achiness
3)all pressure points pain
4)numbness, tingling, pain in hands/feet
5)severe neck, shoulder and lower back pain
6)short term memory loss and difficult concentrating
7) irratable bowl
8) grogginess when waking
9) sleeping disturbances
10) Chronic fatigue
I also have low blood pressure, hypoglocemia, major vision problems, and mitral valve prolapse. This started when I was 33!! I am now 50 - it was years of struggling for a diagnosis and a doctor who recognized fibromyalgia as real. I too, also feel that it is progressive. I work full time in a high stress environment - so I am worthless when I go home. My illness has contributed to many personal problems including divorce after 32 years of marriage.
It's great to feel I now have a way communicating to "friends" who are experiencing the same. I am glad I found this message board! A good day to all!

It is hard to choose only ten, well here goes.
1. Never sleeping throught the night.
2. Can't do the every day things, too tired.
3. Joint pain.
4. Muscle pain.
5. Out of breath on inclines.
6. Bowel/bladder irritability.
7. Dizzy, spacey feeling w or w/o nausea
8. Memory
9. Ear pain and noise
10. Migrains and head aches

Well, I cheated I put more then one on a couple lines. But, there are so many and most have interupted my life. You know what I mean, Kim

Hello everyone,
Scooby, we don't mention the eighteen spots because we wish that's all there were. I don't know who came up with that, but I certainly have a lot more than eighteen spots that can be excrutiating when pressed. In fact, try walking your fingers up your shin bone from the ankles and continue up the leg to the inner side of the thigh pressing all the way up....there's not a spot that doesn't hurt on me as I push, and I'm not pushing very hard. Anyway, one of the most visual signs of a FMer is their constant movement of the head trying to release knots in the neck. I tried to keep track the other day of how many stretching moves I make per day trying to release tension in various parts of my body. It was into the hundreds when half the day was done and I lost track. There's constant scrootching/squirming when we sit. Shoulder dips and raises, head & neck stretching, hand movement to release tension, and on and on it goes, or it seems if you don't, you may never be able to move it again if it gets ahead of your ability to release any tiny bit. My top ten symptoms are:
1. Neck Pains which cause headaches
2. Shoulder/Upper back/Lower back knots
3. Muscles which knot and remain knotted for days, weeks, months at times
4. Irritable bowel
5. Swelling
6. Trouble sleeping soundly for more than 4-5 hours, less without medication of some kind
7. Stomach problems/gerds, idigestion, etc.
8. Tennis elbow
9. Carpal tunnel
10.HEADACHES 24/7

Fortunately, I don't have depression. I give that up to the Lord. How can I be depressed when I know I win someday?

I'm responding for my daughter, whose name is Katy, by the way. Her top ten seem to change around hourly, but most commonly she has
1) migraines
2) neck, upper and lower back pain
3) interrupted sleep from pain, jerking herself awake, and bad dreams recently
4) stiffness
5) PMS for a week and hard periods
6) bloating
7) what I now know is "brain fog," but used to think was ADD except that it always came and went
8) depression
9) She has the ropy muscles and some really solid trigger points, too.
The chiro today said he's never seen a kid whose body refuses so strongly to let her spine stay in adjustment. He's calling the medical dr. tomorrow (who we see on Wed.) to recommend PT. He doesn't like the fibro diagnosis in somebody so young (who does?) and was talking about PT retraining her muscles to convince them they should let her spine stay adjusted. Anyone heard of such a thing?

You know, I read somewhere once where there are over 75 trigger points, but they are not necessarily used to diagnosed FM (When I was diagnosed, I had 18 out of 18, first A+ I had gotten in years). In no particular order, here's my Top 10:
1. Widespread pain everywhere (neck, feet,
hands, chest, shoulders, low back,
forearms, knees...)
2. Fatigue
3. Lack of restful sleep
4. Dizziness
5. Numbness, tingling - mostly in hands
and feet
6. Headaches
7. Jaw pain/clinching of teeth
8. Poor cognitive functioning and memory
9. Stiffness (mostly in morning)
10. Depression.

Just looked at my hands after I posted. I know it's not a symptom when it comes to the diagnosis, but I thought I would add while I was thinking about it, so...

10 1/2. Swelling in the hands and feet!

Wow, this is like reading my symtoms list, I'm having an echo cardiogram done in Jan. heart skips and changes rhythom sometimes. Maybe we should change the list to top 25 symtoms. Does anyone find it sort of scarry to read, it's like seeing yourself in each and every person. I say we are lucky to have this technology and to be able to comfort, receive and share with each other. Take good care, Kim

Gosh, it feels almost redundant to add my list. I COULD just cut and paste anyone else's and it'd work. But then, I've been pretty sucessful at getting rid of the IBS, so I'll leave that off my list, and try to bring in some others
1. extreme fatigue
2. top-to-bottom back pain
3. sciatic pain, both legs
4. facial and sinus pain with chronic sinusitis
5. tremors and shaking of extremeties
6. rib cage radiating to arms pain
7. carpal and tarsal tunnel
8. wrist, ankle, neck/back arthritis
9. no brain cells left
10.knees not able to support weight (and I'm not REAL heavy)

you're right, 10 doesn't cover it

Well, I guess I'll add mine....
1. Severe fatigue
2. Insommia/sleep problems
3. Back and knee pain (degenerative arthritis)
4. IB
5. Severe muscle aches in legs and neck/shoulders
6. TMJ
7. Headaches
8. Loss of coordination & fumble fingers
9. Reactive hypoglycemia & probs w/yeast
10.Sensitivity to cold
10.5 Severe allergies
I do NOT have the typical tender points. I have them but they aren't in the right places, only about 4 were where they were supposed to be. The docs ruled out a myriad of other conditions and then diagnosed the FM based on my symptoms and the chronic pain and sleep problems.

Well, mine are pretty much the same as the rest of you;
1. chronic fatigue
2. severe migraines w/nausia and sensitivity to noise and light
3. carpal tunnel w/the dropsies
4. IBS (Copper - how did you "get rid" of it?)
5. neck pain almost constant - I have just lately had a second cortizone shot in my neck that has helped
6. left side weighs a ton! and doesn't help walking - she's trippin' again! (knees "pop" out too)
7. totally exhausted after any exercise
8. major stiffness and aching joints
9. all over rash that comes and goes
10. freezing cold and burning up every other minute
11. CRS
And as with the others I could easily go on and on....but I'm sure you all know the rest.

Great idea - helps to be able to check out when there is something I'm not sure about.
-Forgetfulness/brain fog
-legs seem to move all night and then get Charlie horse feeling
-a nawing (spelling ain't too great!) ache, mainly waist down
-the soles of my feet can't handle being stood upon (I'm 5 4, 150 so don't think it is weight)
-takes time to type or write as things come out backward and I have to redo
-shoulder and back pain that I just want to scream when I experience
-prickly, over reactive moods
-exhaustion to the point of anything becomes overwhelming, even to wash my hair is an effort of exhertion
-hands ache and ache and burn and go numb; this also goes into the wrists and elbows
-depression

It is truly unbelievable how prevalent this is. I am 31 and I keep thinking I will get better. I have heard stories of remission. Has anyone experienced this? I do still have good days but they are getting fewer & farther between. Here are a few of my symptoms:
1)Sense of fever(thermometer proves no fever)
2)Intense prickly feeling thru-out neck,shoulders & back
3)Headaches that last days
4)Sleep disorder
5)Stiiffness that seems to "shift" from neck to back to leg(s) & everywhere in between
6)So sensitive to touch that I can barely stand clothing
Does anyone else get creepy crawly feelings or an intense inflamed itchy spot that may appear on back of leg & later show up on face or somewhere else?

Yes, I do get crawly, itchy feelings which are inexplicable at the time. As for the fever stuff I thought I was menopausal and never gave any thought to it being a part of fibro symptoms. Mine did go in remission for a couple years after my apartment fire. The Drs at the time told me it was a lifetime condition and I was only in remission. I was most disappointed when it came back. The hot, humid weather seems the worst for me and there are days I don't funtion well here in BC.

I was just reading these lists because I have a diagnosis of Lyme Disease and have experienced most of these symptoms (numbness, fatigue, swelling, muscle pains and aches, joint pain, headaches, plantar pain, weakness, etc, etc.)Many of the symptoms are migratory and last only a few minutes. My old doctor thought I was crazy in spite of a normal psychological evaluation, and recomendation from the psychologist that I indeed had a physical ailment.
I've been on antibiotics for a year now and am somewhat better, but there are some people who get cured. I'm getting bummed because I feel I'll never get better and wonder if I have something else too, maybe fibromyalgia (yeah, another disease w/o a full-cure). I think we can all agree doctors know very little about these "mystery ailments".

My point is not that all or any of you have Lyme but the symptoms are nearly identical and the Lyme test are almost useless. The only real indicator of Lyme is a worsening of symptoms upon initial antibiotic useage. It's worth checking out, but read up on it first because most doctors are clueless, or misinformed. Something is causing all this - I don't buy that your body just goes bonkers and starts to break down. Hopefully somebody will figure it out.

Does anything help you guys w/ sympoms?

1) Chronic pain in almost every joint ( especially complete spine)
2) Chronic muscle pain ,spasms
3) very suseptable to muscle, tendon, & ligament injuries
4) memory loss mostly shortterm but some longterm
5) I have a hard time just carrying on a conversation because every other sentence I cant find the right word I'm trying to say.
6) Pain & stiffness in muscles and joints every morning, & during the day if I do anything too long ( sit, stand , or walk)
7) swelling in hands and face in the mornings
8) Ringing in Ears
9) sharp knife stabbing pains than can can happen anywhere on my body
10) painful swollen lymphnodes lasting a week or 2 then going away for a month or so and coming back for another week or 2.
11) not at this time but in the recent past have had numbness & tingling in arms & legs.
And I could also go on with more...

I'm new to this board, but not to FMS. I have known what to call it for 7 years, but I have had it for many more. Ditto on all the symtoms. I did not see one that I have fought now for about 4 years, overgrowth of yeast.Mine is not the usual,it attacks my skin, mostly my eyelids. I can keep it under control with Diflucan except when I travel. Then it covers my neck. I had many sinus infections until I started taking the Diflucan.Does anyone else have this problem? What do you do?

Ohhhhh Susie, I started with yeast infections postpartum 4 years ago. I eventually went to a specialist and was put on a 6 month course of Diflucan. It killed my stomact. My OB/GYN recommended Acidophilus (same bacteria in yogert) and it's worked like a charm. When I start to get symptoms I just take it twice daily for a week but I don't get them much anymore.

Ditto, Cioc1212! I found the acidophilous worked wonders and it worked real quick, too. I don't ususally get the yeast infections anymore but when I am on a course of antibiotics I do and I dig the aci.. out of the back of my fridge.

Kim, thank you for bringing up this older post as I am new here, and have only delved into the term fibromyalgia since my diagnosis a little over a week ago. Finally after ALL these years, I have a name for it besides just 'laziness'. I am printing out all these 'symptoms lists' and letting my husband read them, perhaps it will help him understand me better to know that others have almost exactly the same symptoms that I try to describe to him. Kim, also wondering how your cardiology workup went, as arrythmias are part of my symptoms and take meds for that too. Also wondering from anyone, who was your main diagnosis from? I went to an MD for symptom after symptom, and female at that, thinking she would understand 'better'. Finally after being told it is simply stress and anxiety, and being prescribed Xanax and told 'it is sad when the ER knows you on site', I made an appointment with a doc that happens to be a DO when my hands started swelling and bruising. Took him 2 visits to check for FM, and amazing, I have a name for something that has been a part of my life for at least 5 years! Anyway, thanks so much for all the post to read, no matter how bad it gets, I know that being able to come here and have reinforcements will be of great help!

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to the board too and don't have a concrete diagnosis of FM yet. Hopefully I won't although I DO want some kind of diagnosis.
Wanted to thank you all for posting your symptoms. I just printed it out and hilited the ones that fit me to take to my doctor tomorrow. Keep me in your prayers, please.

Another sleepless night last night! It sure gets old.

My problems include:
fatigue,
aches all over but mostly in lower back and legs,
invisible bruises,
tingling in arms and legs,
swollen hands
irritable bladder (new discovery)

My doctor says that my fibro stems from my hypothyroidism. hypothyroidism has a whole set of symptoms of it's own and some are duplicated in the fibro diagnosis.

For consideration.
In researching my numerous ailments, (which my doctor can't seem to diagnose) I've found information pointing to "amalgam dental filling complications".
I've read this post and many of the symptoms listed here are the same as the one's attributed to low level mercury poisening. There's alot of good info to be found on this topic at this site under the "dental" catagory or on other sites on the web (search "amalgam" or "mercury filling"). I hope this info will help someone. Good luck to all.

Wow, maybe I've come further than I thought! Kim, thanks for pulling this back up. Here's my list from last year and here's my current list:
LAST YEAR
1. Severe fatigue
2. Insommia/sleep problems
3. Back and knee pain (degenerative arthritis)
4. IB
5. Severe muscle aches in legs and neck/shoulders
6. TMJ
7. Headaches
8. Loss of coordination & fumble fingers
9. Reactive hypoglycemia & probs w/yeast
10.Sensitivity to cold
10.5 Severe allergies

THIS YEAR
1. Leg pain
2. Leg pain
3. Headaches,but not as strong
4. TMJ & related pain
5. Allergies
6. Leg pain
7. Leg pain
8. Sensitivity to cold
9. Leg pain
10. Leg pain

LOL! Aside from the leg pain (!), I'm in a lot better shape than I was last year. Of course I'm 5 steps closer to DEATH but I'm feeling better!

This gave me a much needed boost to keep pursuing my "conditionS" with the damn doctors. After a while it starts to get draining but I guess I'm making progress and should keep going rather than giving up!

Emmaline- Thyroid disorder is DEFINITELY something that should be ruled out, several people who post here have said that their "FM" was cured with their thyroid treatment! Also rule out arthritis, lupus, lyme disease, get head and neck MRI's if you have head/neck symptoms, for irritable bladder rule out kidney stones and bladder infections, also yeast infections which are problematic for many of us and can cause problems similar to irritable bladder; rule out any type of spinal problems(several other members are finding relief when their spinal problems are discovered and fixed). Above all, take charge of YOUR OWN HEALTH and don't sit around waiting for the doctors to do it because THEY WON'T!!!!! The only people I've seen who are getting better are those who educate themselves, ask for tests, ask for copies of test results(I was told that tests were run when they weren't), ask for explainations, etc. Write things down and start keeping a notebook, file and journal. Find a doctor who specializes in FM, Kim and I found a great FM doc and it's made all the difference in the world. Ask questions and don't be intimidated, if a doctor seems like he's not doing a good job, pack up and find a new one! If you have different symptoms, find boards like this and check out what other people who are patients have had done, what tests, what illnesses cause particular symptoms and then go back to your doctor with your questions written down so you don't forget!
I started with a list of symptoms, took it in to any new doctors I saw and handed it to them. Later I got more techincal and set up a chart that included the onset and duration of symptoms. It was very, very helpful, and even though I felt stupid it's something I'd do again. I have a special notebook and as I read books or read stuff here, I'd make a note and then take the book with me to the doctors so I'd remember to ask about it.

I've made more progress this past year than I have in the past 20 and it was only by taking my health into my own hands and becoming active on my own. I got angry and got persistant. This board and the information from other FM sufferers saved me. I know I would not be where I am today without the friends I've made here and the information I've gotten!

Hi. I'm new to this message board thing so bare with me. I have had several of these same symptoms most of my life. I am 33 with three children. I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with me for years but have had no luck. Here are some of my symptoms. . .
1) Mitro Valve Prolapse
2) Irritable Bowel Syndrome
3) Joint pain that is unexplained
4) trouble sleeping.
5) I loose my train of thought during a conversation. I can't find the word I am trying to say.
6) headaches almost all the time
7) I trip sometimes when there is nothing there.
8) sensitivity to light
9) sensitivity to cold. You can't touch me with anything cold it feels like I am being burned.
10) lower back pain that comes and goes.
11) pains in my chest that come and go and they always say it is my Mitro Valve Prolapse.
This is just a small list that I can think of right now. Does this sound familiar? Someone please let me know something. . . .

Wow, you want only ten, hmm? How bout 10,ooo..
Okay, my top ten worst most ickiest symptoms...

1)Chronically severe, torturous pain that seems like the muscles, but also like the bones sometimes, in the back of my neck and across to each of my shoulders. Thats the worst area of pain for me regardless of activity. All I have to do to feel it is to be awake and it never leaves.. By the way, the pain is like having my muscles squeezed in a vice, ripped from the bone and thrown on a hot grill & over cooked. It also hurts my face to laugh or chew. Chewing exhaust my face.

2) Chronic fatigue. Inability to function in any case in any area of life, including taking a shower with out feeling like I will collapse if I don't hurry up and sit down. This is sometimes less, but usually bad.

3) Horrid pain in all of my upper back whenever I do anything but sit or lay. This is especially worse when I sit at my computer (even writing this)or sit at the table and sew, or do anything sitting that requires the use of my hands and arms.

4)Pain in my fingers & hands from typing and arms too, especially hand writing, even after just a few minutes. I also have the same trouble holding onto the steering wheel of my car while driving.

5) The bottom of my feet kill me after more than an hour standing or walking around. They hurt even if I don't do anything but sit too, but not as often and never as bad.

6) Headaches

7) Cloudy thoughts, confusion, that "In a daze feeling", innability to concentrate at all times kind of crap.. Not too mention I stumble over words sometimes. I even forget when I really shouldn't, like 5 seconds after you tell me something.. I also seem to look right through things instaed of at them. Like I have drove by a pharmacy and never knew it was there until my husband told me it was built three years ago. He really freaks on stuff like that..

8)Stomach related crap like messed up bowel movements & always gassy, continuos urination, thirtsty always, messed up periods and all that stuff.. Maybe that was several symptoms, hell I don't know, there goes the confusion again..

9)Lousy, crappy sleep, if and when I finally get it...

10)Nerveously stressed about everything, even over things as simple as the color of the sky, even though it is not my nature!!

Well, thats 10 I think!!

Hi, I was going to list my top ten symptoms, but you all have said it all. How can I explain to someone that I have terrible insomnia, yet I'm fatigued all day? People really do not understand unless it is happening to them. In fact, I spoke to a Doctor on the phone the other day and I told him I had Fibromyalgia, do you treat that? His reply was, "Well, fibromyalgia just means you have aches & pains, I treat what is causing the aches & pains. Needless to say, he's not the doctor for me to go to.

I had fibromyalgia symptoms plus other problems that I linked to my eight mercury-silver dental amalgams. These pains/problems are greatly diminished or gone today after the amalgams were removed about eight years ago. I don't know if I wrote down all of them, but these are what I remember now.
These symptoms were:

1) Leg muscle/joint pain (after trying to exercise)
2) Headaches
3) Lower back pain (so bad at times, that walking was difficult - I had to sit)
4) Chest pain (surprise attacks at any time)
5) Loose teeth/gum disease
6) Bowel problems (especially a few months after experimenting with anti-mercury agents)
7) Urinary problems (severe)
8) Tingling at end of hands (when amalgam was exposed)
9) Low energy, tired, depressed
10)Neck and shoulder pains, especially near shoulder blades
Today I run almost 20 miles a week after being told to not run more than a hundred yards in 1978 by a doctor.

Hi everyone, Gretchen I can relate. I have been dx with fms and cfs for years now. I knew when the neurol. symtoms started that it was more than that. Although from what I've learned that fms is real but they don't know what it is. Can be different for everyone I guess.
For me it turned out to be lyme disease as well. Sorry to hear you have that too. Have you been tested for co-infections. That could be one reason you are not feeling better.
I tested positive for lyme, babesia, bartenella and encepatitis of my brain.
The test are very unreliable. I got tested three times and was told it was neg. The last western blot showed a band that told me I should look deeper. Didn't know till I asked to see a copy of results.
I finally saw a llmd and got things test properly.
I had so many symtoms it can mimic other conditions.
Headpain, HA, tremors, vision problems, extreme fatigue,Irritalbe bowel and loss of bladder, TMJ, numbeness, pain and tingling in hands, dx with carpel tunnel, teeth and mouth hurts, tripping and loss of balance, feel like passing out, left knee and leg pain, numbeness in footand leg, plantar facsia, no rem sleep, depression, anxiety, can't concetrate, can't find words, forgetting what I am saying in the middle of a conversation, these are just a few.

Hi Quennie, I have had hair loss as well, have you ever had your thyroid checked. I am hypo thyroid and that is a symtom. It is common with fms from what I heard.

Hi, I was diagnosed when I was only 22 yrs. old. When you write down your symptoms, how about adding your age? I think that if most of us look back at our childhood we will also find similar symptoms. I was very active and had what they called "growing pains" in my legs. I feel that that may be an early symptom of FM. I am worried about my son because he gets headaches and those same leg pains almost every night. (only 9 yrs. old) How many of you have a mother (father) sibling etc... that also suffers? My mother and one of my sister have FM. Here are some of my symptoms:
1. Muscle spasms all over. (mainly upper back area)
2. Burning pain in any muscle of my body.
3. Lack of energy and endurance.
4. Twilight sleep
5. Neck pain
6. Incontinance and bladder spasms
7. Depression
8. PMS
9. mental fog
10. anxiety
Do you also suffer from guilt because you can't live up to the typical standard of a working wife and mother? That is hard for me, sometimes. But, I feel that the longer you have it, the better you learn what you can and cannot do.

Dana, Yes I have seen my symtoms change over the decades. They say it is not progressive. We would say it is. My husband and I both have FMS etc, and now the 18 year old has FMS and we are concerned about oue 3 year old the other 3 boys we aren't sure about yet but, at least one other shows signs.
All the boys had pains in there legs, stomachs, bodies and vomitted some times with and with out headaches or migrains IB, s;eep problems, hives, allergic reactions to we don't know, they were tested, etc.
3 of them don't want to go to the doctors. I guess they see us and are a bit scared. Also there is only a 25% possibility for them to get if one parent has it and 50% with both.

Guilt, Yes and no. I use to be able to do the super Mom thing. Now we are slowing down. Now, I can't work and take care of our 3 year old. The other 4 boya are 24 years to 18 years.

This is our life and we try to get the best help and just keep going. It has it's ups and downs. The kids help us go forward. They are great joys to us.

I haven't found a pediactric doctor yet that belives in it. But, one that isn't ruling it out.

We have keeped very detailed records for the kids. From the doctors to our own diaries for them with when and what. You might want to do that for your 9 year old. One of ours the 18 yera old with FMS carried peptobismal with him all day in elementary school. The Midrin was kept at the nurses office. This was all before we knew exactly what was up with us.

Good luck and life is to short to worry about what you can not change. Just go with the flow and enjoy you child. Research, research and find the right doctor.

hello again,
I couldn't help but notice that alot of you posting here are from areas where tick-borne illnesses are very common.
Have any of you been exposed to ticks? Just curious?
I know I got it in NH and was told we don't have it here.
But I know different now. It is everywhere but more in the northeast, Conn., NY, NJ, etc.
I was very suprised to find out how wrong the drs. around here were.
It took 8 years and about 45 drs. but got answers.
Don't give up, keep searching for an answer. Don't wait for your drs. to find it they never will. Educate your self and rule out every possiblity.
I have a long road ahead of me but I'm hopeful to get well again.
Blessing to all, deb

Hi! I am new here I'm 33 yo female and I have all of the symptoms listed in others posts. My mother was diagnosed years ago with fibro before it was even moderatly well know in medical field but she and I have many many same symptoms. I saw the post about EMF and I have wondered about that often. I live in the Puget Sound area of Washington state and have been here a year and interestingly this all began after I got here. I have an 11 yo son who has many of my symptoms as well just a lot of chronic pain that comes and goes and headaches very severe frequent 'mystery rashes'. The drs think both of us are hypochondriacs or just seriously stressed out people. I seem to be having new symptoms every couple of weeks. I also have lived in CT just a town away from East Lyme where Lyme disease got its name and I remember one summer my now 11 yo had a tick on him which we removed and put in a baggie and brought to the dr and was told it was not a deer tick so not to worry but now I have heard that not just deer ticks cause these sympoms but also other types of ticks so I wonder if that's a possiblity for him and i both. Although I was tested for lyme but have heard that it's not a reliable test. But it's very hard to get a dr to listen (really listen) and piece together your symptoms and help you. It seems like if they would just look at the 'big picture' they could all get together and say hey something is going on with these people they aren't just crazy and neurotic! It is very frustrating. By the way does anyone experience chest pain as well? I have chest pain on my left side which kind of spreads to my collar bone area and has me a little concerned as it happens frequently but then I think my dr will just dismiss it as 'anxiety' yet again. WEll sorry this is so long but would like to hear others opinions also! Thank you!

This isn't a list of symtoms but, Testing must be done to rule out all that mimic FMS. Lyme is one. And too many to write. Getting to the right doctor; One who is board certified We believe is very important. We always say if you had cancer you would see a cancer specialist that is board certified. Same for FMS.

Hi! I am new to this group and to Fibro..I felt like I was looking into a mirror as I read the other posts. I have had the diagnosis for about 2 months--this is after months of tremendous pain. I am 34 years old and everyone says too young for this-- There are days I feel like I am 70. I have been told that this is not something that is hereditary--but my mother and father both have this as do several of my father's relatives (uncles, aunts, cousins).
I too find it hard to name just 10 symptoms but here goes
1)chronic pain-- base of head-knees, elbows, neck, top of head, calves, lower back, hips, lower arms, hands...
2)tender head
3)TMJ
4) swelling and hands that fell like they are pulsating all the time--- (I find it is easier to type than write-- because it hurts so much to hold a pen or pencil)
5) no Sleep-- as I am posting this at 2:20 am.
6) chronic fatigue--
7) tripping over invisible objects-- hitting walls, falling up stairs (have sprained wrists twice due to this)
8)depression (onset of this was after the birth of my second child)
9) non-stop headaches-- IBS
10) feeling like I am always in a fog-- not remembering things from minute to minute

These are just a drop in the bucket--

It is difficult to write a list of so many symptoms and not mention also that the 2 other diagnoses I have also have many of the same symptoms...I have long since stopped trying to decide which is which. But the one thing that I have had for the last few years now is an itchy back...drives me nuts! Itchy 24/7. I have learned to do the biofeedback thing where you tell yourself it doesn't itch...or you don't have pain or...well, that list is endless isn't it! But there are days that my scratching keeps my wooden spoon moving all day long. And of course have tried ALL the creams and lotions known to man...could be related to routine medications...probably some side effect. At any rate, it is just something I have not seen listed on this subject... so it must be something unique to me....oh goodie.

This is my first post, hope I'm doing it right. I've been reading through the "top ten symptoms" and it is a lot like reading my own diary. I told a doctor once that I "hurt all over" which I guess covers the eighteen points. There are times when you can touch almost any place on my body and find a tender spot. I feel like a walking bruise sometimes. Many places don't hurt until touched, but my joints ache, I don't sleep well, sometimes I am hot and dry and feverish with no infection and can't/don't sweat to lower my temp, I have IBS frequently as well as fatigue and depression from not sleeping or sleeping but waking up with all my muscles clenched and feeling even more tired than when I lay down.... and I have itchy skin too, particularly on my back.
For years I thought I must be losing my mind because the docs couldn't find a specific cause for my problems. I now think the depression is/was a result of constant pain and fatigue and people telling me it was all in my mind. I finally met a rheumatologist who pushed the eighteen points and gave a name to my nemesis. Didn't make me well, but sure helps to know I'm not crazy, I'm not alone, this is real.

Hi All,
From reading the posts on symptoms, it looks as if almost all have been mentioned.
PAIN, of course, is number one, I think. With me, it usually stays in the same general areas - upper back, shoulders, neck, elbows and just recently my left knee.
I think that sometimes parts of it is from osteoarthritis and degenerative disk disease. If I overdo and a joint (like my knee) feels real bad, I'll take about 5mg of prednisone every other day and it calms it down.
I've been going to our jr. college for 7 years and starting taking College Algebra (one of the requirements for an AA and one of two classes I have left to complete the course). I studied in excess of 30 hours for our first test and drew such a blank when trying to complete it. I've dropped the class (first one I've ever dropped). I'm compiling information about fibro fog and want to present it to the disabled students group. I know my doctor will back me up as to this being a real problem. I would like them to give me an alternative to algebra course if possible. I complete three other math courses (2 of them algebra) and feel that there can be exceptions made in some cases.
If I succeed, I will post about it. If anyone else has run into this kind of a problem, I'd really appreciate hearing about it. thanks,
Val

I'm also ten months into my recovery from a brain tumor, so I can't be certain they are all from FMS/CFS, but here are mine:
1) Severe headaches
2) Muscle stiffness
3) Fatigue
4) Joint pain(especially elbows and knees)
5) Tendon troubles (Especially in ankles)
6) Forgetfulness/disorientation/confusion
7) Can't fall asleep, then wake up very groggy, as if I hadn't slept at all.
8) Dizziness/Loss of balance
9) Weakness/Numbness in extremities
10) Tissue pain, as if I'm bruised under my skin

"Thyroid disorder is DEFINITELY something that should be ruled out, several people who post here have said that their "FM" was cured with their thyroid treatment"
Hi,
I've had Hashimoto's (HAIT an autoimmune disease which causes Hypothyroidism) Hypothyroidism and FMS after a car accident in March 1992. Take it from experience, no matter what the lab test say about how great your TSH, T-4 or T-3. It doesn't make the FMS feel any better. And certainly doesn't cure it. There are a couple of links that suggest that FMS, HAIT and Hypothyroidism are actually connected through an autoimmune disorder. Here are the links again. http://thyroid.about.com/health/thyroid/library/weekly/aa090897.htm

Documents are at the end of this link. Check out #2 & #4. It links autoimmune with FMS and CFS. Very interesting reading. http://www.immed.org/illness/autoimmune_illness_research.html

claujuh...I think you need a second opinion. Remember not all doctors believe that there is such a thing as Fibro.

Hello everyone,
I'm in total shock reading everyones symptoms. I have been going to so many doctors this past month because I am in so much pain with my neck and back. The doctor told me I have swollen lymphnodes in the neck which are "probably" caused from my Fibro. I had no clue this could cause these problem.

My symptoms are:
neck pain
back pain
knee pain
calf pain
restless legs when sleeping
my thighs ache sooo bad
headaches
swollen lymphnodes in the back and neck
shoulder pain
hip pain
hands
poor concentration
sometimes I feel as If I can't see properly
under the cheeks of my butt ache if I sit for too long

I'm soooo happy to hear i'm not a hypochondriac. I knew it wasn't all in my head

Hi there,
I just wanted to mention that I did go for physical therapy for a total of 3 months for the neck and shoulders. I would go 3 times a week for a month, then have to get a new prescription to go back as soon as it ran out because It helped tremdously while I went but as soon as I stopped the pain came right back. My muscles tightened right back up. My therapist couldn't believe how fast they went right back to the way they were b4 I started

Ok, same here. Physical Therapy helps tremendously if you get massage therapy for the muscles. But, as soon as you don't go, immediately worse. Those appts. are difficult to do all the time. But, I have 3/4 of everything listed, not really depressed, though. Just can get down from the dealing with this and trying to stay on top of it. Soleil

I recently saw a Rheumy who told me that Fibro doesn't affect hands and feet. From what I've read on this board, it does. I've got pain in my shoulders, both rotator cuffs, knees, hands and feet including fingers and toes. I wish I could find a decent Rheumatologist that I had faith in. I've had a blood test to check for Lupus, Rheum. arthritis, thyroid and sed. rate. This is really frustrating and I'm tired of being in pain. I'm taking Bextra, which gives me minimal relief and I had to get some pain meds.

4. Pain everywhere
5. Brain fog
6. Hands and feet swelling
7. Sensitivity to cold, light and noise

10.3 to 4 days long headaches

I am 45 and i was diagnosed with fm about 7 years ago and it is just getting worse every year. I was going to a rheumatologist until i didn't have ins. anymore, so now i just take it day by day. I just started doing commercial cleaning and i don't know if im going to be able to handle it. I am so tired when i get home all i want to do is take a hot shower and lay down somewhere. It is pretty bad when you don't even have the enegy to make love to your husband anymore. Some days i just want to sit down and bawl like a baby. But i just hang in there and keep on going..........

When I was a baby somebody in my family spilled a bottle of mercury is my basement. We never really cleaned it up properly so now I’m scared for my health. When I was a little older I would go down there to play around and I remember seeing little beads of mercury on the floor. My bedroom is right above my basement. If I were to go into my basement now I wouldn’t be able to find any because it must of all turned into vapors. The thing is I don’t think I have poisoning because I don’t show any signs.

I think one of my worst areas is my back.. It aches and aches.. I really dont have the money to get massages or physical therapy . The knots in my neck are the worst. I cant sit down for very long cuz my back starts to feel cold and tingly.. and I cant stand long cause my muscles in my ankles swell.. Im only 23 and feel much older. My sister has the same things and she has really bad mood swings and pops pills.. I dont take pills unless im in unbearable pain, then ill take celebrex or hydrocodones. Ive learned I just have to deal with the pain, cause I will hace it for the rest of my life. I was diagnosed when I was 16

Here's mine...
1. Severe > insomnia/stage 4 sleep(NOT)
2. Deep back pain (lower and very bad upper)
3. Muscles ache everywhere theres a muscle
4. TMJ
6. Headaches
7. HAIRLOSS
8. Loss of coordination
9. Chemical sensitivity
10.Cold feet and hands

Oh yeah, 10 more...
1. Fibro Fog
2. Losing, remebering...
3. Burning feet (Bottom)
4. Lost of coordination with legs and fingers
5. TERRIBLE chest pain (rib area)
7. Frustration big time
8. Glands swell
9. Bruse easily (Of course it doesn't help matters when I trip over every flickin thing in sight.( :
10. Weight gain....Did I leave out stomach bloating, terribly tender spots all over. Certainly got to watch what I eat these days....mexican and fibro do not go hand and hand....

10.5 Severe allergies
I do NOT have the typical tender points. I have them but they aren't in the right places, only about 4 were where they were supposed to be. The docs ruled out a myriad of other conditions and then diagnosed the FM based on my symptoms and the chronic pain and sleep problems.
