Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to the board too and don't have a concrete diagnosis of FM yet. Hopefully I won't although I DO want some kind of diagnosis.
Wanted to thank you all for posting your symptoms. I just printed it out and hilited the ones that fit me to take to my doctor tomorrow. Keep me in your prayers, please.Another sleepless night last night! It sure gets old.

My problems include:
fatigue,
aches all over but mostly in lower back and legs,
invisible bruises,
tingling in arms and legs,
swollen hands
irritable bladder (new discovery)
My doctor says that my fibro stems from my hypothyroidism. hypothyroidism has a whole set of symptoms of it's own and some are duplicated in the fibro diagnosis.

For consideration.
In researching my numerous ailments, (which my doctor can't seem to diagnose) I've found information pointing to "amalgam dental filling complications".
I've read this post and many of the symptoms listed here are the same as the one's attributed to low level mercury poisening. There's alot of good info to be found on this topic at this site under the "dental" catagory or on other sites on the web (search "amalgam" or "mercury filling"). I hope this info will help someone. Good luck to all.

Wow, maybe I've come further than I thought! Kim, thanks for pulling this back up. Here's my list from last year and here's my current list:
LAST YEAR
1. Severe fatigue
2. Insommia/sleep problems
3. Back and knee pain (degenerative arthritis)
4. IB
5. Severe muscle aches in legs and neck/shoulders
6. TMJ
7. Headaches
8. Loss of coordination & fumble fingers
9. Reactive hypoglycemia & probs w/yeast
10.Sensitivity to cold
10.5 Severe allergies
THIS YEAR
1. Leg pain
2. Leg pain
3. Headaches,but not as strong
4. TMJ & related pain
5. Allergies
6. Leg pain
7. Leg pain
8. Sensitivity to cold
9. Leg pain
10. Leg pain
LOL! Aside from the leg pain (!), I'm in a lot better shape than I was last year. Of course I'm 5 steps closer to DEATH but I'm feeling better!
This gave me a much needed boost to keep pursuing my "conditionS" with the damn doctors. After a while it starts to get draining but I guess I'm making progress and should keep going rather than giving up!

Emmaline- Thyroid disorder is DEFINITELY something that should be ruled out, several people who post here have said that their "FM" was cured with their thyroid treatment! Also rule out arthritis, lupus, lyme disease, get head and neck MRI's if you have head/neck symptoms, for irritable bladder rule out kidney stones and bladder infections, also yeast infections which are problematic for many of us and can cause problems similar to irritable bladder; rule out any type of spinal problems(several other members are finding relief when their spinal problems are discovered and fixed). Above all, take charge of YOUR OWN HEALTH and don't sit around waiting for the doctors to do it because THEY WON'T!!!!! The only people I've seen who are getting better are those who educate themselves, ask for tests, ask for copies of test results(I was told that tests were run when they weren't), ask for explainations, etc. Write things down and start keeping a notebook, file and journal. Find a doctor who specializes in FM, Kim and I found a great FM doc and it's made all the difference in the world. Ask questions and don't be intimidated, if a doctor seems like he's not doing a good job, pack up and find a new one! If you have different symptoms, find boards like this and check out what other people who are patients have had done, what tests, what illnesses cause particular symptoms and then go back to your doctor with your questions written down so you don't forget!
I started with a list of symptoms, took it in to any new doctors I saw and handed it to them. Later I got more techincal and set up a chart that included the onset and duration of symptoms. It was very, very helpful, and even though I felt stupid it's something I'd do again. I have a special notebook and as I read books or read stuff here, I'd make a note and then take the book with me to the doctors so I'd remember to ask about it.
I've made more progress this past year than I have in the past 20 and it was only by taking my health into my own hands and becoming active on my own. I got angry and got persistant. This board and the information from other FM sufferers saved me. I know I would not be where I am today without the friends I've made here and the information I've gotten!

Hi. I'm new to this message board thing so bare with me. I have had several of these same symptoms most of my life. I am 33 with three children. I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with me for years but have had no luck. Here are some of my symptoms. . .
1) Mitro Valve Prolapse
2) Irritable Bowel Syndrome
3) Joint pain that is unexplained
4) trouble sleeping.
5) I loose my train of thought during a conversation. I can't find the word I am trying to say.

10) lower back pain that comes and goes.
11) pains in my chest that come and go and they always say it is my Mitro Valve Prolapse.
This is just a small list that I can think of right now. Does this sound familiar? Someone please let me know something. . . .

Wow, you want only ten, hmm? How bout 10,ooo..
Okay, my top ten worst most ickiest symptoms...
1)Chronically severe, torturous pain that seems like the muscles, but also like the bones sometimes, in the back of my neck and across to each of my shoulders. Thats the worst area of pain for me regardless of activity. All I have to do to feel it is to be awake and it never leaves.. By the way, the pain is like having my muscles squeezed in a vice, ripped from the bone and thrown on a hot grill & over cooked. It also hurts my face to laugh or chew. Chewing exhaust my face.
2) Chronic fatigue. Inability to function in any case in any area of life, including taking a shower with out feeling like I will collapse if I don't hurry up and sit down. This is sometimes less, but usually bad.
3) Horrid pain in all of my upper back whenever I do anything but sit or lay. This is especially worse when I sit at my computer (even writing this)or sit at the table and sew, or do anything sitting that requires the use of my hands and arms.
4)Pain in my fingers & hands from typing and arms too, especially hand writing, even after just a few minutes. I also have the same trouble holding onto the steering wheel of my car while driving.
5) The bottom of my feet kill me after more than an hour standing or walking around. They hurt even if I don't do anything but sit too, but not as often and never as bad.
6) Headaches
7) Cloudy thoughts, confusion, that "In a daze feeling", innability to concentrate at all times kind of crap.. Not too mention I stumble over words sometimes. I even forget when I really shouldn't, like 5 seconds after you tell me something.. I also seem to look right through things instaed of at them. Like I have drove by a pharmacy and never knew it was there until my husband told me it was built three years ago. He really freaks on stuff like that..
8)Stomach related crap like messed up bowel movements & always gassy, continuos urination, thirtsty always, messed up periods and all that stuff.. Maybe that was several symptoms, hell I don't know, there goes the confusion again..
9)Lousy, crappy sleep, if and when I finally get it...
10)Nerveously stressed about everything, even over things as simple as the color of the sky, even though it is not my nature!!
Well, thats 10 I think!!

Hi, I was going to list my top ten symptoms, but you all have said it all. How can I explain to someone that I have terrible insomnia, yet I'm fatigued all day? People really do not understand unless it is happening to them. In fact, I spoke to a Doctor on the phone the other day and I told him I had Fibromyalgia, do you treat that? His reply was, "Well, fibromyalgia just means you have aches & pains, I treat what is causing the aches & pains. Needless to say, he's not the doctor for me to go to.

I had fibromyalgia symptoms plus other problems that I linked to my eight mercury-silver dental amalgams. These pains/problems are greatly diminished or gone today after the amalgams were removed about eight years ago. I don't know if I wrote down all of them, but these are what I remember now.
These symptoms were:
1) Leg muscle/joint pain (after trying to exercise)
2) Headaches
3) Lower back pain (so bad at times, that walking was difficult - I had to sit)
4) Chest pain (surprise attacks at any time)
5) Loose teeth/gum disease
6) Bowel problems (especially a few months after experimenting with anti-mercury agents)
7) Urinary problems (severe)
8) Tingling at end of hands (when amalgam was exposed)
9) Low energy, tired, depressed
10)Neck and shoulder pains, especially near shoulder blades
Today I run almost 20 miles a week after being told to not run more than a hundred yards in 1978 by a doctor.

Hi everyone, Gretchen I can relate. I have been dx with fms and cfs for years now. I knew when the neurol. symtoms started that it was more than that. Although from what I've learned that fms is real but they don't know what it is. Can be different for everyone I guess.
For me it turned out to be lyme disease as well. Sorry to hear you have that too. Have you been tested for co-infections. That could be one reason you are not feeling better.
I tested positive for lyme, babesia, bartenella and encepatitis of my brain.
The test are very unreliable. I got tested three times and was told it was neg. The last western blot showed a band that told me I should look deeper. Didn't know till I asked to see a copy of results.
I finally saw a llmd and got things test properly.
I had so many symtoms it can mimic other conditions.
Headpain, HA, tremors, vision problems, extreme fatigue,Irritalbe bowel and loss of bladder, TMJ, numbeness, pain and tingling in hands, dx with carpel tunnel, teeth and mouth hurts, tripping and loss of balance, feel like passing out, left knee and leg pain, numbeness in footand leg, plantar facsia, no rem sleep, depression, anxiety, can't concetrate, can't find words, forgetting what I am saying in the middle of a conversation, these are just a few.

Hi Quennie, I have had hair loss as well, have you ever had your thyroid checked. I am hypo thyroid and that is a symtom. It is common with fms from what I heard.

Hi, I was diagnosed when I was only 22 yrs. old. When you write down your symptoms, how about adding your age? I think that if most of us look back at our childhood we will also find similar symptoms. I was very active and had what they called "growing pains" in my legs. I feel that that may be an early symptom of FM. I am worried about my son because he gets headaches and those same leg pains almost every night. (only 9 yrs. old) How many of you have a mother (father) sibling etc... that also suffers? My mother and one of my sister have FM. Here are some of my symptoms:
1. Muscle spasms all over. (mainly upper back area)
2. Burning pain in any muscle of my body.
3. Lack of energy and endurance.
4. Twilight sleep
5. Neck pain
6. Incontinance and bladder spasms
7. Depression
8. PMS
9. mental fog
10. anxiety
Do you also suffer from guilt because you can't live up to the typical standard of a working wife and mother? That is hard for me, sometimes. But, I feel that the longer you have it, the better you learn what you can and cannot do.

Dana, Yes I have seen my symtoms change over the decades. They say it is not progressive. We would say it is. My husband and I both have FMS etc, and now the 18 year old has FMS and we are concerned about oue 3 year old the other 3 boys we aren't sure about yet but, at least one other shows signs.
All the boys had pains in there legs, stomachs, bodies and vomitted some times with and with out headaches or migrains IB, s;eep problems, hives, allergic reactions to we don't know, they were tested, etc.
3 of them don't want to go to the doctors. I guess they see us and are a bit scared. Also there is only a 25% possibility for them to get if one parent has it and 50% with both.
Guilt, Yes and no. I use to be able to do the super Mom thing. Now we are slowing down. Now, I can't work and take care of our 3 year old. The other 4 boya are 24 years to 18 years.
This is our life and we try to get the best help and just keep going. It has it's ups and downs. The kids help us go forward. They are great joys to us.
I haven't found a pediactric doctor yet that belives in it. But, one that isn't ruling it out.
We have keeped very detailed records for the kids. From the doctors to our own diaries for them with when and what. You might want to do that for your 9 year old. One of ours the 18 yera old with FMS carried peptobismal with him all day in elementary school. The Midrin was kept at the nurses office. This was all before we knew exactly what was up with us.
Good luck and life is to short to worry about what you can not change. Just go with the flow and enjoy you child. Research, research and find the right doctor.

hello again,
I couldn't help but notice that alot of you posting here are from areas where tick-borne illnesses are very common.
Have any of you been exposed to ticks? Just curious?
I know I got it in NH and was told we don't have it here.
But I know different now. It is everywhere but more in the northeast, Conn., NY, NJ, etc.
I was very suprised to find out how wrong the drs. around here were.
It took 8 years and about 45 drs. but got answers.
Don't give up, keep searching for an answer. Don't wait for your drs. to find it they never will. Educate your self and rule out every possiblity.
I have a long road ahead of me but I'm hopeful to get well again.
Blessing to all, deb

Hi! I am new here I'm 33 yo female and I have all of the symptoms listed in others posts. My mother was diagnosed years ago with fibro before it was even moderatly well know in medical field but she and I have many many same symptoms. I saw the post about EMF and I have wondered about that often. I live in the Puget Sound area of Washington state and have been here a year and interestingly this all began after I got here. I have an 11 yo son who has many of my symptoms as well just a lot of chronic pain that comes and goes and headaches very severe frequent 'mystery rashes'. The drs think both of us are hypochondriacs or just seriously stressed out people. I seem to be having new symptoms every couple of weeks. I also have lived in CT just a town away from East Lyme where Lyme disease got its name and I remember one summer my now 11 yo had a tick on him which we removed and put in a baggie and brought to the dr and was told it was not a deer tick so not to worry but now I have heard that not just deer ticks cause these sympoms but also other types of ticks so I wonder if that's a possiblity for him and i both. Although I was tested for lyme but have heard that it's not a reliable test. But it's very hard to get a dr to listen (really listen) and piece together your symptoms and help you. It seems like if they would just look at the 'big picture' they could all get together and say hey something is going on with these people they aren't just crazy and neurotic! It is very frustrating. By the way does anyone experience chest pain as well? I have chest pain on my left side which kind of spreads to my collar bone area and has me a little concerned as it happens frequently but then I think my dr will just dismiss it as 'anxiety' yet again. WEll sorry this is so long but would like to hear others opinions also! Thank you!

This isn't a list of symtoms but, Testing must be done to rule out all that mimic FMS. Lyme is one. And too many to write. Getting to the right doctor; One who is board certified We believe is very important. We always say if you had cancer you would see a cancer specialist that is board certified. Same for FMS.

Hi! I am new to this group and to Fibro..I felt like I was looking into a mirror as I read the other posts. I have had the diagnosis for about 2 months--this is after months of tremendous pain. I am 34 years old and everyone says too young for this-- There are days I feel like I am 70. I have been told that this is not something that is hereditary--but my mother and father both have this as do several of my father's relatives (uncles, aunts, cousins).
I too find it hard to name just 10 symptoms but here goes
1)chronic pain-- base of head-knees, elbows, neck, top of head, calves, lower back, hips, lower arms, hands...
2)tender head
3)TMJ
4) swelling and hands that fell like they are pulsating all the time--- (I find it is easier to type than write-- because it hurts so much to hold a pen or pencil)
5) no Sleep-- as I am posting this at 2:20 am.
6) chronic fatigue--
7) tripping over invisible objects-- hitting walls, falling up stairs (have sprained wrists twice due to this)
8)depression (onset of this was after the birth of my second child)
9) non-stop headaches-- IBS
10) feeling like I am always in a fog-- not remembering things from minute to minute
These are just a drop in the bucket--

It is difficult to write a list of so many symptoms and not mention also that the 2 other diagnoses I have also have many of the same symptoms...I have long since stopped trying to decide which is which. But the one thing that I have had for the last few years now is an itchy back...drives me nuts! Itchy 24/7. I have learned to do the biofeedback thing where you tell yourself it doesn't itch...or you don't have pain or...well, that list is endless isn't it! But there are days that my scratching keeps my wooden spoon moving all day long. And of course have tried ALL the creams and lotions known to man...could be related to routine medications...probably some side effect. At any rate, it is just something I have not seen listed on this subject... so it must be something unique to me....oh goodie.

This is my first post, hope I'm doing it right. I've been reading through the "top ten symptoms" and it is a lot like reading my own diary. I told a doctor once that I "hurt all over" which I guess covers the eighteen points. There are times when you can touch almost any place on my body and find a tender spot. I feel like a walking bruise sometimes. Many places don't hurt until touched, but my joints ache, I don't sleep well, sometimes I am hot and dry and feverish with no infection and can't/don't sweat to lower my temp, I have IBS frequently as well as fatigue and depression from not sleeping or sleeping but waking up with all my muscles clenched and feeling even more tired than when I lay down.... and I have itchy skin too, particularly on my back.
For years I thought I must be losing my mind because the docs couldn't find a specific cause for my problems. I now think the depression is/was a result of constant pain and fatigue and people telling me it was all in my mind. I finally met a rheumatologist who pushed the eighteen points and gave a name to my nemesis. Didn't make me well, but sure helps to know I'm not crazy, I'm not alone, this is real.

Hi All,
From reading the posts on symptoms, it looks as if almost all have been mentioned.
PAIN, of course, is number one, I think. With me, it usually stays in the same general areas - upper back, shoulders, neck, elbows and just recently my left knee.
I think that sometimes parts of it is from osteoarthritis and degenerative disk disease. If I overdo and a joint (like my knee) feels real bad, I'll take about 5mg of prednisone every other day and it calms it down.
I've been going to our jr. college for 7 years and starting taking College Algebra (one of the requirements for an AA and one of two classes I have left to complete the course). I studied in excess of 30 hours for our first test and drew such a blank when trying to complete it. I've dropped the class (first one I've ever dropped). I'm compiling information about fibro fog and want to present it to the disabled students group. I know my doctor will back me up as to this being a real problem. I would like them to give me an alternative to algebra course if possible. I complete three other math courses (2 of them algebra) and feel that there can be exceptions made in some cases.
If I succeed, I will post about it. If anyone else has run into this kind of a problem, I'd really appreciate hearing about it. thanks,
Val

I'm also ten months into my recovery from a brain tumor, so I can't be certain they are all from FMS/CFS, but here are mine:
1) Severe headaches
2) Muscle stiffness
3) Fatigue
4) Joint pain(especially elbows and knees)
5) Tendon troubles (Especially in ankles)
6) Forgetfulness/disorientation/confusion
7) Can't fall asleep, then wake up very groggy, as if I hadn't slept at all.
8) Dizziness/Loss of balance
9) Weakness/Numbness in extremities
10) Tissue pain, as if I'm bruised under my skin
