My recent experience has been so amazing that I have to post in hopes that this will help some other people. My FM pain was getting so much worse (used to be only mornings, but lately had been all day and much, much worse) and so much more frequent that I decided to re-read all the internet sites I'd bookmarked over the years on tips for coping with FM. One of them suggested eliminating all foods and drinks containing excitotoxins (Nutrasweet, MSG and many other common ingredients of processed foods such as hydrolyzed vegetable or soy protein, textured soy protein, sodium caseinate, yeast extract, natural flavorings, etc. etc. -- apparently they don't have to put MSG on the label if they don't directly add pure 100% MSG but just add something that already has MSG in it!). Do an internet search on excitotoxins, and you will be amazed at the interesting and downright scary information that you find. A Mississippi neurosurgeon, Russell Blaylock, has written a book called Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills that details the effects of aspartame and MSG on many neurodegenerative diseases as well as migraines, brain tumors, Alzheimers and more. In the past few days I have become essentially pain-free by eliminating some supposedly healthy soy-based burgers and hot dogs (and, I must admit, diet sodas) I was eating on a daily basis. I have also been amazed to discover the number of common foods in my pantry that contain MSG disguised with names like "hydrolyzed soy protein." Would never have believed there was MSG in my tuna fish! (apparently the low-sodium variety is OK). And in many low-fat dairy products!! After being pain-free for a few days, I foolishly ate some Chinese food! Back to square one -- I won't do that again! Looking back, I can see that my pain has been increasing as I added more and more of these supposedly healthy processed foods to my diet (and also diet sodas in an attempt to reduce carbohydrates). I encourage everyone to try eliminating excitotoxins and see what effect it has on your pain levels. I can now walk upstairs easily, whereas before even stepping up on a low curb was very painful. Hope this works for lots of you!! [This message has been edited by moderator2 (edited 10-05-2002).] [This message has been edited by SharonMWinner (edited 10-05-2002).] IP: Logged |

Hi SharonMW, I just read your information and I also have started to eliminate MSG. It is in everything it seems. Currently I am on a very boring diet, low fat meats (fresh) nothing precooked by grocery stores, a frozed vegetable, and baked potatoe. I won't eat breads of any kind because of the gleutin. No cheese of any kind, cause of the molds. (I am allergic to molds) I drink a glass of whole milk with the meal. I take one magnesium tablet a day. I don't eat anything with nitrates, such as weiners, ham, lunchmeats. For the past two weeks I have been very faithful on this diet. I have noticed less aching, less total body pain. I am now walking everyday at least for twenty minutes but I had to start out at 5 minutes a day only for about a week. It is getting easier to walk farther now. I do believe the diet has much to do with the aches and pains. I am trying everything possible to just plain feel better. Aren't we all? Thanks for the good information. Dawnsmist IP: Logged |

I also have shown marked improvement with dietary changes and supplements. I make sure I get three square meals a day along with plenty of vegetables, keep processed and fast foods to a minimum, added magnesium, multivitamin and bromelain supplements, and my pain levels have reduced dramatically. Just started taking glucosamine/chondroitin for arthritis in my neck, as I've heard it stimulates cartilage growth. Dave IP: Logged |

I have learned that some California grapes are being sprayed with an anti-fungicide that contains MSG. There is no way to determine which wines ae made out of these grapes. I recently had a relapse after drinking 2 glasses of California red wine. For 2 days I was back to where I was before I started this excitotoxzin-free diet (the Chinese food reaction only lasted 1 day!). Last night I stuck to French and Chilean red wine. Today I feel great. It is so wonderful to wake up pain-free. I never thought it would happen. I urge everyone to give it a try.Dawnsmist, I too stay away from nitrites, and thought I had a very healthy diet before I discovered how many foods contain MSG. Sounds like you need to spice up your diet a little, or you won't be able to stay on it. How about some olive oil, lemon juice and herbs on fresh vegetables instead of frozen? IP: Logged |

I have been looking into juicing for I have heard it's good for you. We have an juicer now and have found that I feel better than I was before drinking it. I will take an look into this book in time for I can't hold an book for too long because it makes me sick and dizzy. It's either the ink &/or the paper. Thanks for the info. 4eversick IP: Logged |

If you make your own Indian food from scratch, you should be all right. If you buy processed Indian foods, then you will have to read the labels to determine if they contain MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable or soy proteins, artificial and/or natural flaorings, etc. etc. Do an internet search for excitotoxins and truth in labeling to find out how to determine what ingredients and foods to avoid. Restaurants are another matter -- many use bottled sauces, packaged spice mixtures, etc. which may contain MSG. IP: Logged |

My thoughts on wine are, it's a definite no no and so sorry but due to Fibro fog today I can't remember why!!! It has something in it, an ingredient that starts with S that causes pain especially in Fibromyalgia people. also, be careful with juicing. veggies are great when juiced, but be sure you peel them to eliminate the toxins from sprays. Juicing a fruit is like eating a simple sugar. (candy) It needs a major insulin rush to digest it. It's a good way to gain weight. Fruits metabolize as a sugar. So, don't over eat any thing, but try to balance your foods. I have read that if you eat a fat with a high glycemic food like a fruit, it reduces the amount of insulin (our fat making hormone) that is needed for digestion. IP: Logged |

Most wines contain sulfites as a preservative, which is a problem for some people. It doesn't seem to bother me, but California wines and grapes definitely do. [This message has been edited by moderator2 (edited 11-11-2002).] IP: Logged |

Thank you so much. Sulfites is the word I was looking for. Several people who have Fibromyalgia have warned me against wine because of the extra pain that it can cause after drinking it. I have sometimes experienced that extra pain and sometimes I have been fine with no added pain. I am not educated in wines and dont drink it often enough to know if some wines are worse than others for this problem. One of my worse pain attacks ever was at a beach in Florida. It was hot, we went on a walk down the beach, returned, drank a wine cooler, and wham I felt like a Mack truck hit me. I had never had such an attack of violent all over pain so fast and severe in my life. we left the beach and I collapsed in bed with a Darvocet and slept for 4 hours. I will not combine any form of wine with a "hot" vacation day again. Anyway, I think it's worth looking into if you are a wine drinker, as to whether or not you have additional pain shortly after drinking wine. IP: Logged |
