A friend of mine, a 17 year old boy, has extremely flat feet. He has been seeing a Podiatrist who wants to perform surgery, which would involve wrapping a tendon under his arch and stapling it to the other side to support his arch. He would still have to wear orthotics afterwards. He has been told it would take 5 to 8 weeks to heal. The Podiatrist seems to be in a rush to do this, even though it could interfere with my friends High School graduation.

This seems like a very drastic surgery, and I am encouraging him to get a second opinion, preferably from an Othopedic surgeon.
I would appreciate any information and/or personal experience re: this surgery.

I have rather low arches and a doctor meddled with mine when my foot was in a cast, now I have nothing but problems.

I think it is unwarranted and drastic sugery and that there is NO RUSH, even if the boy wanted it.
I think he may be trying to get it done on the parent's insurance before he loses the chance to make a few bucks off him. A prestigious surgeon told me that every surgery weakens the body tissue, and should be avoided unless one cannot function or would die without it.

I suggest that if the boy can walk and function fine, leave it alone. If he can function fine with orthotics, leave it alone. There is no quarantee of avoiding nerve damage or infection, either.
