My Mom has been complaining about a metallic taste in her mouth. Does anyone have any idea of what this could be? Thank you

A metallic taste can often be caused by medication.

My recommendation would be for you to gather a list of all medications and vitamin/mineral/herbal supplements that your mother takes, and go to your most trusted pharmacist. Often, in my experience, a pharmacist is much more up-to-date on and knowledgable about side effects and the rate of occurence of various side effects.

Obviously, if your pharmacist is busy, etc, you could call your mother's doctor's nurse and ask her to find out about some possible reasons for the taste.

If worse comes to worse, you can sit down with the list of medicines and search the internet for side effect information on each one.

I believe that I have also read of some more serious causes of metallic taste. Therefore, if you carefully check each of her medications and/or supplements, and none have an indication of metallic taste as a side effect, I would recommend that your mother sees her physician. The doctor would probably run some tests and be able to put your minds at ease.

Good luck! I hope she is okay!

P.S. I know the previous information because my mom had the same metallic taste in her mouth about six months ago, and we followed all of the above steps. We finally figured out that one of the topical medications that she had been prescribed for her adult rosacea (a skin condition) was causing the taste. She switched medicines and is just fine!

Also -- what does her diet consist of? This is purely a conjecture, and is probably completely off the mark, but very low carb intake (low enough to stimulate ketosis) can produce a metallic taste and breath.

Just to round out the already good suggestions here!

I'll suggest four things:

1. blood in your mouth tastes metallic...any bleeding gums or infection?

2. yeast in your mouth can taste metallic...a sign of yeast infection is a white film on your tongue in the morning.

3. if the metallic taste comes after coughing then it can be a lung infection.

4. thyroid problems can cause a metallic taste because of an over accululation of iodine

Dental amalgams are metallic. They are mostly composed of mercury, first - then secondly silver. Does she have a lot of metal fillings? You could read up about that. I'm not sure if a lot of metal fillings could do that for a person, but I suppose it might, if someone had recent dental work and had a lot of these fillings.

One of the jaw muscles, the medial pterygoid, can entrap a portion of the lingual nerve causing a bitter metallic taste. If medical tests rule out the conditions suggested above by other healthboards members, you may consider seeking treatment from a doctor, dentist, physical or massage therapist experienced in treating the muscles of tmj.

When does she notice the taste? All the time? Or only after certain situations?
