On occasion I will get a sharp, split second pain along the side of my head. I've had these on and off for several years. I only get them about once a year or once every other year. But boy are they painful. I did some research on them and have found that they are called ice-pick headaches and are possibly a rare form of migraines. Does anyone else get these?

Hello,

Yes, I have these type of head pains too. Usually happens if I lean down to pick something up, get up from bed too fast, or get up from a sitting position too fast. I practically see stars, the pain is so very bad. It takes a few seconds but it goes away, thankfully. So now I have to be careful not to lean my head down, or get up too fast. Usually when I feel these 'ice-pick' pains on the right side of my head, I end up with a migraine in an hour or two. They seem to lead up to it. I put up with this almost daily, and when it gets unbearable, I take extra strength pain relievers, and use my hot water bottle on the back right side of my neck while lying down in a dark room. I also drink chamomile herbal hot tea, as well as peppermint hot herbal tea, and hot Chai herbal tea. All seem to relax me enough to help ease the pain and sleep. I definitely rather drink those than be taking too much medication for the migraines.

I hope you can get some relief from your pain soon. I totally sympathize with you. It is hell.

I also suffer from these sharp ice pick-like pains. Mine come on out of the blue. I could be driving a car, relaxing, etc. Thank God they don't last long. I don't get them often but I've had them for years. Never got it check out, so thanks for sharing your experiences. Now I know I'm not alone. Hope everyone is doing well.

I have the same thing happen to me. The pain is quick sharp and incredible. I was worried that it was an anurism(sp). They come on quick without provocation, and last less than a minute. Sometimes it is just one wave of pain, sometimes it is several. When it goes away, it is gone completely. I have been dealing with this a couple of times a year for the last decade. I do not suffer from migranes. There might be something ot this ice pick headace thing. I will ask the DR. next time I go.

Hello,

I get the same ice pick in head sensation when I am working out or if I bend over and come up fast. I have gotten no help after lots of tests. Mine lasts from hours to days. midrin or epidrin helps me during the day. I would get checked out because when I described my symptoms to my doctor, he was alarmed enough to get me a CT, MRI, and angiogram of my head to check for aneurysms and tumors. Good luck!
