Is there a way to tell if you have clogged arteries, before you have a heart attack? I'm extrmely worried, and would like to know if this has any symptoms. Thanks

Hi Zoider:
Symptoms of "clogged arteries" in the heart (coronary artery disease) vary depending on the degree of occlusion/stenosis and your threshold for pain. The most common sign of CAD is angina (discomfort or pain) that radiates from under the breastbone and out along the left breast. You may also experience pain/burning in your left arm/armpit/shoulder. This pain/discomfort may also be accompanied by shortness of breath. Silent ischemia has few if any symptoms (ergo silent), even though there is restriction of blood to the heart due to blockage/stenosis.
If you experience discomfort, especially during periods of exercise/stress, it is possible you have some degree of blockage. The only way to be sure is to undergo tests (stress test, ekg when pain present). The most definitive test for detecting CAD is the angiogram. If you are experiencing pain/discomfort as described above, you should make an appointment with your doctor soonest and have it evaluated. No sense waiting until you have a heart attack before seeking medical treatment. Best of luck.
