Hello, I have had these two bumps on my penis for three days now and have had them in the past. Never in clusters, but sometimes more than one at a time. They are always on the shaft and never the head. I have been to the doctor and he thought it might be mucous build-up or something of that nature. Told me not to worry about it. I'm concerned because my last partner had herpes. Can anyone tell me if it looks like herpes? or something else they've had? Thank you very much.

Martin

Why would your doc not recognize herpes?

Good question...maybe they're not herpes. He didn't seem to think so, but I'm worried because my old girlfriend had them. Maybe I'm just paranoid and don't trust my doctor. ) and hope someone can give me some feedback. Thanks very much.

The best way to find out if it's herpes is to get a swab test within 24-48 hours after the symptoms appear. Just remember that swab cultures are notorious for false-negative results, so if it comes back negative it doesn't necessarily mean you don't have it. A positive result is virtually always accurate though.

I think you have reason enough to be concerned and want some solid testing done by your doctor, since your last partner had it. Was it type-2 that this person had? If so, and if it was more than 3 or 4 months ago since the symptoms started, get your doctor to order a POCkit test, which tests specifically for type-2 and is inexpensive and fast in its results. If you test sooner than that it could come back as a false negative and you won't know for sure.

Herpes can look very different from one person to the next, so doctors don't always recognise it on sight alone. If this doesn't tell you anything for sure, get your doc to refer you to a dermatologist. It's obviously *something* and may or may not be contagious, but you want to be careful with it in any case.

Good luck! Let us know how you make out.

Thanks oneinfour, I guess I'll head back to the doctor for a real test. The first time I went he perscribed "diprolene AF" which is corticosteroid used for it's anti-inflamitory properties. Well, that narrows it down! I'll give an update once I get back...thanks so much for your advice!

If it is herpes, cortisone products tend to make it worse...or at least don't help the healing. It provides an environment in which herpes can replicate easily. You may want to stop it until you find out for sure. Good luck!

Martin,

I have recently discovered a similar bump on the shaft of my penis. There is no pain, but upon pressure the bump has emitted a white pus...kind of like popping a zit. I have, in the past, found similar solo bumps on the underside of my scrotum. This is the first one I have seen on my penis and thus its a cause of worry.

I am eager to hear what the doctor tells you; I am thinking of going in soon myself.

Brandt

I don't know what it is but if it is herpes, wouldn't people in this forum know what it looks like? Did it pop or ulcer or did it go away or did it scab up??

The problem is that herpes can look very different from person to person, plus there are other things that look like herpes. Herpes is commonly misdiagnosed for ingrown hairs, pimple, rash, candida/yeast, etc. So it's not as easy to tell just from sight as you might think. That's why I recommend that if anyone is concerned, get it tested.

oneinfour is right the only way to really know is to get tested, and while it is scary, it is way better to set your mind at ease and also to find out the facts straight up so you can begin dealing with the outcome.
I think its great that you would come here and talk about it, talking about it is the first step to dealing with it. Really stress to your doctor that you want to check specifically for herpes..sometimes docs take the easy way out too.. and call it good without going as far as testing.
Being responsible for your health and the health of your partner or future partners is very commendable. Good for you.
