Cold sores. Everybody hates them. From the first tickle, to the swelling, to the blistering, to the end when it dries up and leaves for another little while.

What home remedies have worked for you?

Thanks!

I have HSV II, not I, but for HSV I try the following: 2 grams of Lysine a day (everyday), vitamin C, zince, vitamin E, Lactobacillus acidophilus 3 x day, Kali Mar for at least 6 months - any of the above for home remedies. See what works. The high dosage of Lysine is great for HSV II also. And for an over the counter remedy for oral herpes, maybe try some Abreva ointment! Seems to work with people I know who have used it. And, avoid getting too much sun, too. It causes terrible oral herpes outbreaks in many people, even more so than stress or being under the weather.

So many people have told me to beware of sun... but the only time I've ever gotten these stupid cold sores is in the winter... in '96 on new years eve and in '00 in february, now in '02 in december...

I went and bought lipactin... hope it works..

the worst part about this cold sore business,,, my lip swells up... so not only do i have this little listered area. I have this huge fat lip!! no word of a lie, it looks like someone swung at me and conected solidly with my mouth!!

anyway.. so much for christmas pictures this year.

Thanks for your reply, PhoebeM. Peace

Lynn893, it sounds to me like the trigger might be more stress than anything else, since December holidays are often high stress times. Different people respond more or less to various common triggers. For some it's sunlight (or ultraviolet), for others it's more from stress, for others it might be food, etc.

In future (or even in anticiation of New Year's this year), you might take some antiviral medication or other medication (e.g., alternative supplements or oils) as a prevention starting in early or mid-December. Just a thought.

L-Lysine was the miricle cure for me. I take it as a daily supplement with special attention when I am going on holiday, feeling run down, or scuba diving. These situations were all triggers for an attack. Since I started taking L-Lysine (a free form amino acid) I just don't get coldsores unless I forget to take them on holiday.

It is certainly a miricle cure for me.

My triggers involved dramatic weather/pressure hence flying and scuba diving. odd but true.
