Hello.
Does every pimple, bump or blister have to be herpes? I mean, I don't know that much about herpes but from what I've read on here, that seems to be the case. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I get little pimples around my mouth all the time and within a week or so they go away. I've never went to the doctor and had them tested for herpes. I also get bumps on my bum, but they just seem to go away on their own as well and they not really bothersome. I've also had a bump in my pelvic area that I dismissed as just a bump from an ingrown hair and it went away within like a few days...Should I have went to the doctor to have to be tested for herpes when I saw all of this?

Hi Paisley,

No, not necessarily. There really are such things as ingrown hairs and pimples and so on that have nothing to do with herpes. If they come up in the same place over and over, then you should get it checked out by getting a culture swab within 24-48 hours of the onset of the symptoms.

Most people that find their way to this board usually have some other reason to suspect that it is herpes in their case. If you're concerned and want to be sure for your own peace of mind, get a type-specific blood test done, which will show if you have either type even when you don't have any symptoms.

The stuff around your mouth could be HSV-1, which most of us have from childhood. To be on the safe side, you should avoid kissing or other skin-to-skin contact from the symptomatic areas when you have those symptoms.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! That helps alot. However, when I went to have an STD screening I asked if they checked me for herpes and they said that they only do that when there are symptoms of it. So, are you saying that the type-specific blood test will detect herpes at ANY time? If so, why did the clinic tell me that?

If you don't mind me asking...what are some of the other reasons why people suspect herpes?

The blood tests aren't always used because the old ones didn't tell you much. They didn't differentiate between types 1 or 2 (usually oral vs genital), and since 50-90% of the population has type-1 that doesn't say much when you have a sore on your genitals. The new tests are more expensive and not all places know about them. Plus, they're not considered a standard test for STDs, unfortunately. But they are there. Western Blot is the best one, also the most expensive. There's also HerpeSelect which is less expensive and just about as accurate. Also the POCkit test, which is very cheap and gives fast results but only tests for type-2.

People might suspect they have herpes when symptoms suddenly appear within a few weeks after having sex, esp. with a new partner. There are other symptoms too, like tingling, itching, burning, swelling or redness in a particular area, or flu-like symptoms like swollen lymph glands. If they get sensory or visible symptoms in the same place over and over, that's a red flag too.

Hope that helps!

You mentioned the pockit test for hsv2, is that something we have to go to the doc for or is it avaliable like a home pregnancy test?

Spirit, I think you still have to go through your doctor. If you do a search for POCkit, you'll find their site, I'm sure, which gives information about how you can arrange to take this test with your doctor.

I still am not sure which type I have, even though I'm pretty sure it's HSV1. I'm on Kaiser and they're really cheap, and I doubt they'd do the western blot. If I asked them to do the POCKit and it came up negative, would it be safe to assume I have type 1?

That would be my conclusion too, assuming your first symptoms came on more than 16 weeks ago.

they came on about 8 or 10 weeks ago, so I'd have to wait a couple of more months.
I suppose due to this type issue and considering supressive therapy, I should make an appt to see my doctor to discuss all of this..
