I was wondering...I was on the Bernstein diet a couple of years ago and lost 80 pounds. Now, unfortunately, I have gained it all back with my recent pregnancy. I was considering doing the Bernstein diet again, but had heard that instead of having to go to the clinic and pay more than $100 per week, I would be able to take Vitamin B12 & B6 (1000 mg per day). Does anyone know if there are any side effects I should be concerned about with taking large doeses of these vitamins?

There are two types of vitamins in the world: fat soluable and water soluable.

fat soluable vitamins include:
calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K.

These should be taken with fat to allow proper absoption (little known fact, if you want to get you calcuim from skim milk, eat a little cheese or something with fat with it ) These are also the vitamins that can reach toxic levels more easily. I once read the Army Survival Handbook and it said that if you kill a polar bear for food, never eat its liver as it has toxic amounts of vitamin A. A fact you may very well have had no interest in, but I find it facinating. The reason being that fat soluable vitamins get stored by your body. What your body doesn't need is held on to for later. Water soluable vitimins go out in your urine if it is unused. Therefore it is more difficult to reach toxic levels. The over consumption of vitimins is what has been termed by some in the Medical profession "expensive urine" because a lot of valuable nutrients just go down the drain.

Water Soluable vitamins include:
ascorbic acid, B complex, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin P
These are more difficult to reach toxic levels with; almost unheard of really. But they are solvents that get flushed through your kidneys and so my advice it to make sure you drink TONS of water if you do this diet. Watch your blood pressure (adding lots of solvents to your blood stream can sometimes increase blood pressure, this is the principle behind reducing salts when you have hypertension).

Other than that many people very much like b vitamins. They stabilize mood and make you feel more energetic.

Good luck!
