For several years off and on, I have what sounds like fluttering my my ear. It is a constant on and off thing. My ENT has no solution -- anyone have any information on this?

Hello

Check out tensor tympani syndrome or idiopathic stapedial muscle spasm.

I,too, get that weird ear fluttering, but have had it for years, way before my dizzies set in and usually in my right ear which is considered my "good" ear...I always thought it had something to do with my sinus's draining, but not sure.

I too have had this fluttering in my left ear. It is almost like a twitch. I played in a band for years and I used to get this twitching when I came home from a gig.

This started about 2 years ago. Shortly after I started suffering from anxiety and dizziness. It seems to be worse when I am in bed. The room doesn't spin as such, but I get this horrible sensation which makes the room seem like it is moving and I am floating. My doctor told me that the two were not related. I went to see an ENT specialist who had a quick look in my ears and down my throat. His explanation was the nerves were "thinning out" in my inner ears and basically there was nothing that could be done about it.

The doctor has now put me on Effexor but I am still suffering with diziness.

When I get dizziness I take mecclizine -- you can buy it without a prescription -- it works great!

I'm wondering, Mr. Oy, how your ENT can make such a diagnosis by a quick look in your ears and down you throat...I would demand more tests to pinpoint exactly what it is, not a probably is. My old ENT was the same way..Never really gave me a diagnosis and released me with a "It will go away"...I got a new ENT and a diagnosis after 10 months of suffering and found out there is help for what I have.

Hi Noody Pooh
What exactly do you have? and what did you do to help it?
I have fluttering in my ears that drives me nuts and gives me headaches. I was told by 3 docs that it was just allergies and would go away. The allergy medicine is just drying me out but the fluttering is still there.

Hello I have been reading a lot of posts and of course I'm here cuz I too have fluttering in my ear. The right one for a week now and it is continuios I have cried, it drives me nuts. I am gona try to get in to the clinic tomorrow. My teeth are starting to ache, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it but not ruling it out. I have took leftover pain pills just so I can sleep. I noticed a few connections with the yeast infeaction on some posts. Funny I have been taken Diflucan for about three months. I have fingernails that have a fungus but the doctor prescribed only one pill a week. I see him wed. so hopefully he'll increase it cuz it is very slow working. Does anyone think this might have something to do with it? I tried putting proxide, warm olive oil, alcohol mixed with vinegar(recommended by a nurse friend) cuz I thought it was water in there, finally came to the conclusion it was a nerve or something. It is like when your eye twitches except in the year. But no pain only raw from monkeying around with it. Any suggestions? Thank You Karol

That's good that you are going to see the Doc this week===in the mean time---check this out:

......."Tinnitus (pronounced "tin-it-tus") is an abnormal noise in the ear.

Tinnitus is common -- nearly 36 million Americans have tinnitus and more than half of the normal population has intermittent tinnitus. About six percent of the general population has what they consider to be "severe" tinnitus.

Tinnitus can come and go, or be continuous. It can sound like a low roar, or a high pitched ring.

Tinnitus may be in both ears or just in one ear. Seven million Americans are so severely affected that they cannot lead normal lives

Pulsitile tinnitus: people hear something resembling their heartbeat in their ear.".........

Thank You Subs30 for the insight. It was very helpful. I found another site, Jackson ear clinic, and there I saw what I feel is wrong with my ear right down to the description. So at least I can talk to the P.A. with a name of something. Muscular tinnitus. The treatment said in some cases a anti-seizure med. helps or a minor surgery by clipping some nerves or something like that. Some causes can be caffine, lack of sleep and stress. Well all of the above for me. Well thanks again for your kindness. We'll see! Crossing my fingers. Karol

Hi KarolKay,

Yup it does sound like 'muscular tinnitus' otherwise known as palatal myoclonus - tensor tympani syndrome - or idiopathic stapedial muscular spasm. The fact that your teeth are now hurting could be a BIG indicator that what you are experiencing in your ears could be caused by tempero mandibular joint disorder - this causes spasming in the muscles around the jaw (It's usually caused by long term clenching or grinding of teeth) and often initially only presents as ear symptoms - palatal myoclonus being one of them. It is generally diagnosed by a good tmj specialist or an oral surgeon and the treatment is generally a splint, (mouthguard) worn at night or 24 hrs for a period of time, which gives the muscles around the jaw/ear a chance to rest. This is the long term treatment - in the short term limited use of benzos (valium etc) at a low dose can calm it down. Check out the tmjd board on here.

Hi hbep,
Yep I seen a Doctor on Monday and he had me do a lot of things to check my balance and such and put me on a low dose of valium (5mgs.)He said he wanted to see me in two days if it did not work. I was unable to see him that following Wed. like he said, the valium didn't work. So I had a appointment on Friday. That day it stopped so I canceled. For two days It was fine, then lastnight (Sunday) it started, so I took two pills and today it hasn't started up. I sure hope I don't have to keep doing this. I use to grind my teeth cuz it would wake my boyfriend up. But now my jaws don't hurt no more and according to my boyfriend he hasn't heard me grind in over a year. Well if it keeps coming back I will have to check out what you suggested. Thank You very much. Karol

I have suffered off and on for 7 years with this but the past year has been the worst. Lasted 7 months then went completely away for 2 1/2 months now it's back. I am now just finding out about this stapedial spasm stuff and it sounds like I've finally found a name for it. Has anyone tried Clonazepam? Did it help and how soon? How much do you take? I take Xanax now. I also read that muscle relaxants might help but which one? Any info would be appreciated.
