Metamucil is a natural fiber supplement and does not have any side effects, so as far as I am aware it will not make you tired either.

I think I pointed out in one of my previous answers that you should be taking it twice daily, both morning and night.

You need to drink plenty of water with fiber so that you wash it through your system. You should be drinking at least 2 - 3 litres of water daily anyway for good health maintenance, seeming as your body actually contains a good 50 - 70% of water anyway, depending on body weight.

If you don't drink enough water with fiber, then it will just back up in your system and you will either stay as constipated as before or become more so.

If you read these boards, I think you will find that most people take Metamucil all the time and have no problems with it. It is a natural product being a fiber supplement with no side effects, other than increasing the bulk of your stools and making it easier and less painful to pass stools. It can save you from having to spend hours sitting on the toilet because you can't open your bowels.

The only thing about metamucil is you shouldn't take any of your meds at the same time or within 2 hours (I think) of taking it. Diane

Hi! FYI: I was looking on the back on my Metamucil container. It states that if you don't drink enough water (to wash it all down), the fiber can cause swelling in your throat which could result in choking!!

Hi Stacy. Don't worry about side effects of Metamucil - it's perfectly safe. But it is important to time it right with medications. You need to take meds 2 hours before or 2 hours after Metamucil. I eat the wafers as a mid morning snack and then again in the afternoon or evening. That way it doesn't interfere with my morning or bedtime meds. Water is crucial to help it move through your system.

I took metamucil for a long time with no problems, first the wafers and then the capsule form. I had no problems for a long time. Recently I took two capsules and soon after was unable to swallow, but this only lasted for a second. I drank a bunch of water to try and wash it all down. Since then, (about one week) I have had constant throat irritation. I figure any problem caused by the metamucil should have gone away by now, but the two events were so close together I can't help but thinking they are related.

Metamucil works by increasing stool volume. It does this because psyllium has the ability to absorb MANY MANY times it's weight in water and getting quite large.
If you take it too dry it can absorb water from the first thing it touches, your throat and stick like glue.

Always lots of liquid and well mixed (no lumps.)I like unflavored, no sugar-added version,
mixed with a large glass of Crystal Light (cheapy version of course)
