I've noticed over the past 6 months that my fingernails have become very weak and have begun to peel off in layers...even if I clip them back past the point where they're peeling, they still continue to split and peel.

Just wondering if this could be yet another lovely symptom of menopause. I always had beautiful long nails and since I began menopause they've gone right down the old porcelain convenience. Anyone else have a similar experience?

My nails have always sort of gone through "cycles". For a few months they'd be great and then back to the splitting peeling syndrome. Before I was menopausal I thought it might have something to do with my hormomal cycle but they are still on and off again peeling. My best guess would be that I'm lacking in some vitamin. The first one that comes to mind of course is calcium. I try to remember to take it every day, but life is hectic! I should be eating a diet richer in calcium (and all the other vits as well!) but...well I really have no excuse. You've got me thinking that maybe I should try to track my eating habits and vitamin intake and see if it makes a difference. A friend of mine swears by tea tree (sp?) for her nails.
In the meantime I just keep them short and clean. (especially with all the scary viruses around, I want to SEE under my nails and make sure they're clean! No nail polish for the time being)
Back to your original question, I don't notice any difference now that I'm menopausal than before...Tagger

Fingernails splitting are a symptom of a thyroid problem. You may want to look on this board and see if you have any other symptoms.

Not sure if this is a sign of menopause, but my nails have done the same thing and it seemed to start right at the time my memopause symptoms started. I tried taking natal vitamins, and using all sorts of nail products with no results. I finally went to the doctor, he prescribed 2500 mg of biotin daily(a vitamin) - I have been taking it (along with using a product called Nail Tek)for about 4 months now - AMAZING is all I can say. Don't know if it's the biotin or the Nail Tek, but my nails no longer peel, and they are actually strong and healthy again.
