Hello, new to the board. I am 51, had a complete hyst. when I was 45. I have been on HRT ever since. The latest one I was on was Estratest (2+ years). That made me feel great renewed my sex drive. But, now I'm growing a few hairs on my face and have melasma. Never had the first menopause symptom till now. I went on Estratest HS, for the past 6 weeks. I feel yuck. Lost some of my sex drive, just feel crappy. Now for the questions. Just how do I get off the hormone altogether. What should I expect? I want to know from women who have been there.... Are backaches and nausea part of the menopausal symptoms? I have those too. I had a recent bone scan, and it shows some calcium loss in my pelvis. I thought those hormones would help that. So far, no hot flashes, I guess the hormone takes care of that. I am having trouble concentrating. Is that part of menopause, too? Seems I am having PMS symptoms all over again. I could not pinpoint my bad feelings till today when I remarked that I felt like I was going to start my period--which I know I cannot do. I guess I want some answers from those who have been there. I've always been quite healthy. Now I feel crabby, crappy and just want to chew nails! Any words of wisdom? IP: Logged |

Hello, I am much younger than you and am going through menopause by way of hysterectomy But the "symptoms" are the same. For me personally, this whole menopause thing has been absolute hell. After my surgery I immediately gained 40 lbs (within 2 months). That was the most drastic change. I have hot flashes that last thoughout the day sometimes, mood swings that just aren't right, I can't concentrate at all, I am a college student so that doesn't work too well for me. Insomnia is part of menopause, which I found out the hard way. Aches in limbs are related, I'm not sure about back pain because i have 2 herniated discs so i already have back pain. My breasts change sizes all the time, I actually ended up having to buy different bra sizes and wear accordingly, depending on the day. I am rarely in a good mood, i've come to be depressed from all the weight gain and inability to control my body, mind and emotions. All around I am a mess. My hormones are obviously imbalanced and I am trying different types and brands and doses of estrogen and progesterone to try to balance the scales. For me it has been a nightmare. But that's for me, not everyone. Some women go though all this just fine, some experience certain symptoms more often and more intense than others, so it is really hard to compare notes, so to speak, and come away saying so that's what it will be like for me. But i have noticed a trend on this board.. hot flashes, and depending on the HRT no sex drive, which should be illegal, especially for a woman in her 20's as I am, it's just so not fair! So to sum it up I am always tired, never want to have sex, hotflashing at least half the time, can't read a sentence let along a book, go from Cinderella to the Wicked Witch of the West in 10.4 seconds and just hate everything about how I feel. I am desperately trying to find out where the person I used to be went. I never used to be a bitter person, I was nice and outgoing and liked everyone. I'm still trying to figure out if I should have just delt with the pain I had instead of going through all of this. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I am 44 (next month) and menopaused at 43 this year. My Peri-menopause was worse than how I feel now. I had intermittant nausea and inability to fall asleep, but that has subsided for the past year. You must talk with your doctor about getting off of any meds that you're on. You can get counseling from nutritionists, but your doctor is the only one that can address your meds. I have osteoporosis - pretty bad T Scores ( Hang on in there. I am sure that you had your operation for a good reason. The body will adjust. Do not give up hope ! IP: Logged |

This is for Mrs.Kramden. I am so glad I read your reply. I turn 41 next week and have had symptoms off and on for 5 years. I need to have a bone density test. Everyone has told me so far I am nuts except my sister in law who is same age and same symptoms. Am seriously thinking about a new gyno...probably why I havent had the test done yet...I dont know who to go to. I havent stopped or skipped periods and I still ovulate 6 to 8 times a year. (I had one ovary removed with my last baby). Ok this is a new one for me. My breasts either itch before I ovulate or get my period or I hurt for 2 weeks after I ovulate til I get my period. (I feel like I need to nurse a baby!) Is that normal too? Thanks for any reply. IP: Logged |

Hi! I am 41 and have had peri-menopause symptoms for the last seven years. I have been on an hrt for the last three. Today I go for a hysterectomy because of early stages of cancer. I had the exact same symptoms and YES brain fog. Lacking hormones causes short-term memory loss too. I am nervous about my hyst. they will take my ovaries. However I am already symptomatic with the hot flashes, night sweats, and memory loss ... so I guess I will just have to deal with it. It isn't like I have too many choices with the cancer. Hang in there. I have a friend ten years my senior who is now through the change and not on any hormones. She took hrt for a few years. She said things get back to normal after a while. A different “normal” but not feeling crazy. She sleeps again and doesn't have the ups and downs with here hormones now. It is comforting to me to know that menopause isn't a disease. It is normal and will get better with time. Blessings, Kathy IP: Logged |

To Josie :You can get a referral for a bone density test from a general prationer/internist. Tell him/her you are in peri-menopause and you must have your bone density tested.Boy, I wish I had known about this several years ago.No, you ARE NOT NUTS. What's nuts is when you do menopause and you sit there hearing someone say, oh, your bone loss was happening over a period of time , like 3-4 years ago. Ugg! What's happening, if you are in peri-menopause, is that estrogen (among the others) is leaving your body.I am not sure if the decrease in estrogen is actually causing the breast symptoms, but I have heard women complain about the same thing and they were fine. Start going for mammograms, though.40 is when we should start - I started at 38 because my cousin had breast cancer and we all ran for mammos and it turned out my sister had cancerous cells-they would have been a lump in 5 years ! But she had an easy procedure and is fine. My decrease in estrogen lead to an abnormal cervix cells(not sure if I mentioned that already). It seems like my breasts were never affected by my period, peri-menopause and menopause. I never had children, though. I am not taking any HRT- but unfortunately I may be looking at creepy Fasomax But yes. Definitely do not feel weird going for a bone density scan. I felt funny, cuz I look really young and feel great as well have good muscle tone and I figured -eh, why not ? Man, I was floored by the results. I expected to have 100% intact bone density. Let me know how it all goes ! ~ IP: Logged |
