: : : I am 18 years old and have been working out for about 27 months. I just started taking whey protein powder about 2 months ago. I was watching Rivera on CNBC and they were talking about the positive drug tests of some of the Olympic athletes. They said that some nutritional supplements have anabolic properties that are not stated on the label and can cause kidney problems if taken as a teenager. I've always thought of protein powder to be no more anabolic than vitamin C but can whey protein supplements have any negative effects on my kidneys? I take 2 scoops after I workout which is 44 grams of protein and sometimes I take one scoop before bedtime.
: : Whey protein is a very good source of protein and immunity factors. However, it does sound like you might be taking a lot which could put a strain on your kidneys. Why don't you use just two scoops per day with each scoop being taken with a different meal?
: Too much? The reason why I take my 2 scoops right after my workout instead of spreading the servings out throughout the day is because I was told that your body needs the protein the most right after a workout. Won't my muscles absorb most of the protein?
Protein is not an anabolic steroid. In fact Protein is an essential building block for muscle development. You will find protein in meats, fish and even beans. Creatine is a from of complex protein. Yes if you use the protein after exercise the muscles will absorb and use the protein. You will not test positive for steroids for using protein supplements. They were discussing the use of prohormones... and those type of supplements. Rest easy young laddy !!!
