I tried extreme low fat dieting. I did initially lose weight. Then I stopped losing, so I decreased my intake. Still couldn't lose, so I decreased more and more and exercised a lot. It got to where I was walking 3 miles a day, doing aerobics, and eating (no lie!) no more than 500 calories and maybe 5 grams of fat a day, and I still couldn't lose because my body was now in starvation mode and my metabolism had about shut down. So I gave up on the low fat and went to low carb, and that worked better for me. Low fat works well for some people. Make sure you don't starve yourself like I did.
I'm not sure about the French eating low fat. I've heard the opposite, that they eat a diet quite rich in fat, with rich sauces and liberal use of real butter.
