: my body is "energy deficient"; when I try to lose weight through diet and exercise, even though I follow the guidelines, my body just will not let go of the last 20 pounds. I am 130 and would like to be 110. Also I am 5 foot 4.

: I spent the last few days moving and unpacking with constant physical activity. As I would get around to where I would lose weight, I would get weak-kneed and light-headed and would be forced to eat. In this way, my body refuses to let me cross the thresh-hold where I can lose weight by eating fewer calories than the amount I burn.

: My husband says this is because I go on starvation diets. That I eat so little that my body just shuts down instead of providing me with the energy I need. However what he doesn't understand is that if I were able to lose weight on a 1400 calorie diet, I would not be eating less than this in a form of desperation.

: Has anyone else had the same experience? What do you do if diet and exercise DON'T pay off?

: p.s. I would also like to mention that I do eat healthful food; whole grains and beans, fruits and vegetables.

Hi. I am 5'4 and I weight 127. When I started dieting 2 months ago, I was 143. I do a low fat diet and I consume 1600/day. I don't exercise regularly. I have lost 16 pounds just doing the low fat thing. I eat A LOT of salad, and low fat yogurt/cottage cheese. I eat lean meat, and veggies. Your husband is right, starvation diets are NO GOOD and what has probably happened is your metabolism has gotten screwed up because of it. YOU HAVE TO EAT. What you should try is eating five times a day...about every three hours. Eat salads and low fat stuff and see how that works. One more thing that I can't stress enough...WATER, WATER, WATER...you must drink A LOT of it. I drink 80+ ounces of water/day. You need to drink AT LEAST eight, 8 ounce glasses/day. Good luck to you.
