: my body is "energy deficient"; when I try to lose weight through diet and exercise, even though I follow the guidelines, my body just will not let go of the last 20 pounds. I am 130 and would like to be 110. Also I am 5 foot 4.

: I spent the last few days moving and unpacking with constant physical activity. As I would get around to where I would lose weight, I would get weak-kneed and light-headed and would be forced to eat. In this way, my body refuses to let me cross the thresh-hold where I can lose weight by eating fewer calories than the amount I burn.

: My husband says this is because I go on starvation diets. That I eat so little that my body just shuts down instead of providing me with the energy I need. However what he doesn't understand is that if I were able to lose weight on a 1400 calorie diet, I would not be eating less than this in a form of desperation.

: Has anyone else had the same experience? What do you do if diet and exercise DON'T pay off?

: p.s. I would also like to mention that I do eat healthful food; whole grains and beans, fruits and vegetables.

You identified your problem in that last sentence. All of those things that you listed, except for some vegetables, are high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates cause your body to release insulin to keep your bloodsugar tightly regulated. Insulin is the fat storing hormone. If it is elevated in your bloodstream, then it will block the bodies ability to utilize fat for fuel. That's the facts. Metabolism 101. I suggest that you get a copy of Protein Power and read it and start eating more lean protein and less of the carbohydrates if you want to lose that bodyfat. Alan S.
