Recently saw my Mom for the first time in 2 years. She is 70, has had adult onset diabetes for about 15 years, had kept it under control with medicine and diet. She is now disoriented in both short and long term memory, and exhibits, for lack of a better term, child-like behaviors, no attention span, no ability to follow conversations. She can apparently fool her GP doc, my father is in total denial. She eats puffed rice for breakfast, grilled cheese for lunch (or burger king,) and an apple for dinner, and pretzels and sugar free candy all day long. I cannot get her or my Dad to get her to a specialist. She is a shell of herself from two years ago, when she could still do the NY times crossword. The mental deterioration is dramatic and I know it must be related to her terrible diet. Am I right, what can I do?
