: Hi,
: my father in the UK is a type 2 diabetic. My mother tells me the diabetic clinic advised her to give him plenty of carbohydrates like potatoes, rice, pasta etc. I am alarmed at this, it goes against everything I've read. A diabetic diet should be low-carb, high-protein, surely?
: Thanks in advance for any advice,
: Diane

I agree with your thoughts totally. Diabetics should avoid high gylcemic foods like sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, bananas, and most fruit. The diet should consist primarily of protein and fat and non-starchy vegetables. This will keep the bloodsugar levels down naturally. A type II diabetic on this diet may be able to avoid medication and insulin, depending on the circumstances. My best advice is to get a copy of "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" which is available at most bookstores or online at Amazon.com. He advocates a very low carbohydrate diet for his patients.
