In Reply to: pre-sneeze wave of nausea???? posted by Ruth on August 29, 2000 at 12:15:55:

: Does anyone else experience a pre-sneeze wave of nausea? It feels nothing like the standard "pre-sneeze" feeling, which is mainly facial; this is real nausea, like oh-my-god-I'm-gonna-vomit. Then after a minute or two I sneeze (usually three or four times in a row, real "eardrum-busters"), and the nausea feeling is mainly gone. Is that strange or what??!! The bummer is, in allergy weather I sneeze a LOT. :-(

: I never had any allergies (or at least, none that amounted to anything) until I was in my late 40s and had a real bout of pneumonia. Ever since then I've had bigtime allergy problems. Sometimes I get the classic sinus type reaction (facial pain, congesiton, etc.) but I also get a very flu-like set of symptoms that include extreme fatigue, muscle pain, coughing, etc., plus nausea .... but the weirdest part is that pre-sneeze nausea! Sometimes it's literally bad enough to turn into "dry heaves".

: I'm so glad I found this board! I always read everything I can find on allergies but they always talk about congestion, sneezing, and coughing - never about things like nausea, burning red face, fatigue, etc. It makes me feel less distressed just to know that these are fairly common allery reactions.

I have had the same symptoms as long as I can remember and I have a sister that experiences the same thing. I get an extreme wave of nausea that is really deeper and different than if it was just stomach related. The nausea reaches a peak and then I suddenly have the urge to sneeze. Sneezing immediately relieves the nausea but I am not always able to sneeze. Whether I sneeze or not, my sinus start draining as if I am having an allergic reaction. My stomach troubles have increased in the past couple of years and my sinuses seem to be involved so I been through extensive testing for digestive problems from ulcers to gallbladder to irritable bowel problems with all tests coming back normal. All the while, I have explained to the doctors this relation between my nausea and my sinuses. None have been able to explain the correlation and most don't seem to take me seriously. Finally, I had one more test, a CT scan of my sinuses and head. I have moderate sinus disease and chronic sinusitis which leads me to believe this: I have always thought my sinus trouble and sneezing was a result of my stomach/nausea because the nausea came first. But, it may be that my sinuses have been the trouble and they are causing my nausea. Honestly, I'm still not convinced. If you find an answer please post it. I also, at times, have the tingling in face. Thank you!
