In Reply to: Knee problem with cracking and severe pain-Help posted by Raven on October 15, 2000 at 11:20:26:

: I have osteoarthritis in my right knee, right hip, both wrists and my left ankle. I injured my knee in 1983. It has a bad cracking sound on movement with pain when walking up stairs, running ect. Doc says it is osteo but about 2 weeks ago something strange happened. I fell landing on my knee because both my wrists are in casts and the knee was sore for as few days but then all of a sudden while I was walking it got stuck and I couldn't move it, after a few minutes I was able to move it but with a sharp pain like there was something stuck in my knee somewhere and the next day the pain moved to a different part of my knee. If I touched the spots it felt like a bruise. This has been going on every few days. I will be fine and then the locking and severe pain. I called the Doc and I have a appointment on Oct 30 for x-rays but I am worried, what is going on? I am a 38 yr old female fairly active but about 40 pounds over weight. What should I do before I see the Doc? I am scared I may not be able to walk after a while. In Dec I am having surgery on my right wrist for Carpel Tunnel and then another surgery on my left wrist for a tendon injury to my thumb sometime after that. Why am I falling apart? Raven

My husband, who did not have arthritis at the time, had a similar problem many years ago.
His knee was fine and then, all of a sudden while walking, it would sometimes lock up. He'd
also get a cracking sound when bending his knee at times.
For him, the problem turned out to be a small piece of loose cartilage. Doc was able to do a
quick orthoscope procedure to remove the piece . He was supposed to stay on crutches
for a few days, but tossed them aside as soon as he was home later that day.
I hope all goes well for you.
