: : : I am 20 years old still suffering from JRA. I've been diagnosed since I was in 6th grade and have tried almost every medicine I've heard about on the boards here. I'm currently on methotrexate, but have constant flare-ups. I've also been on prednisone, plaquenil, gold shots, and naprosone. Today I was given infomation from my rheumatologist about Enbrel and I need to make a decision soon. I'm really nervous about it since it's been out for such a short time and about long term side effects, especially since I'm so young. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm in college and really want to get my RA under control before I go back to school this fall. Is this medicine worth while? What about any other medications? I need to know soon...
: : : Thanks!
: : Hi, Just read your question to you is how much Prednisone do you take? I have been on it for years (9) I started at 5mg and now am on 20mgs per works for me...just to stop the pain...I have tried EVERYTHING on the market like Celebrex, Vioxx, Enbrel, Methotrexate, Relafen, etc. etc. etc. I now have been on ARAVA for two months...I think it might be working just a little...I still have some pain in the mornings and when I wake up if I take a nap during the day...I would suggest you try it before you try all the other drugs I did...just a suggestion....
: : good luck MKalyn :)

: The pred is a bit much. funny how doctors either prescribe pain meds or pred for pain. I take a long term in med instead of taking any pred, weird. But as for the DMARD question...methotrexate is the cheap warhorse that has been around for decades. Arava, remacide and Enbrel are all new and the long term side effects are not known. Enbrel is the most expensive one and some folks are taking it in a combo with methotrexate or arava. I am on Enbrel now because my liver was irritated while taking methotrexate. So far wonderful results. The plus side is Enbrel doesn't harm the organs like methotrexate-liver or gold-kidneys.
: Enbrel doesn't cloud the brain like some feel methotrexate does to them. It is a self injection twice a week but the little prick of the needle is worth the tremendous difference it can have you feeling in a short time. The down side is if you stop it the arthritis symtoms come back quickly and you do need to stop anytime you suspect you have an infection. Bummer. Some have had injection site rashes about shot 4 or 5 but it goes away over 4 days and you can take Benedryl for the itching. It doesn't happen to everyone. After starting Enbrel I was able to cut my pain meds by half. Wonderful feeling.

Hi..I too am on Arava and Tolmetin...these seem to be working pretty well...mornings are still tough but they are alot better than what I was dealing with...I am also worried about the new-ness of it all but Methotrexate was not for me..way too many side effects and felt ill most of the time...I wish you well...
