Liver Metastases ?origin & mass in pancreas

I wonder if anyone could help. My Father in Law has been diagnosed with Liver Metastases of unkown origin (he's previously had a bowel resection for bowel cancer, over 10 yrs ago and brachytherapy for prostate cancer 5 yrs ago). He has a DVT in each leg, a pulmonary embolism (clot in his lung) and now they've found a mass in his pancreas. They say they don't know what this mass is yet but it doesn't sound good!

He's 75 yrs of age, looks a little jaundiced, his calves are swollen, his abdomen is bloated, he has no appetite and is confused on and off. He's currently in hospital on a 'care of the elderly' ward which is just awful. He's been referred to the Oncologist and we're really hoping he'll be transferred to an Oncology ward where they're trained to be compassionate and sympathetic towards this kind of thing.

Can anyone tell me what the average life-span is of someone with Liver cancer? Are there any drugs they can give to slow down the cancer? Is he likely to be moved to Oncology in view of all the other things going on?

Sorry for all the questions but currently on the ward he's on, getting any answers is like pulling teeth!!

thanks, Jo x
