Front lower 6 unit bridge vs implants

I am 38. When I was 16 I was in a car accident that damaged my lower front teeth, canine to canine. One tooth was knocked out, number 27 and numbers 23, 24, 25, 26 and 28 have root canals and crowns (with a bridge covering 26-28). Recently I broke off number 25 and will need to have it the root extracted. My dentist is recommending a six unit bridge. He recommends that we also extract 24 and 26, since these roots are short and fragile and may break under the stress of a 6 unit bridge that is now required. I have been reading so much about bone loss after tooth extraction that I am concerned about what will happen to my arch in the long term... will it eventually recede below the pontics? Are implants a better option? My dentist says that a six unit bridge in this area would be better since there is only 2cm span from canine to canine in my mouth and if implants were done they would simply replace the canines and create a similar six unit bridge anyway. Any thoughts?
